Moving to a new computer, or losing one

The full guide is in the repository: docs/RECOVERY.md. Here is the short version.

What you need to open your data anywhere

  1. A backup file (atlas-….db.enc) and its key-info file (atlas-….keyinfo)
  2. Your passphrase or your twelve recovery words

Have those and you can always get back in. Lose both secrets and nobody can, including us.

Move to a new computer

  1. On the old one: Settings → General → Backups → Back up now
  2. Copy the newest backup and its matching key-info file to the new computer
  3. Install Coin Heaven there, but don't open it yet
  4. Put the two files in the app's data folder, renamed atlas.db and atlas.keyinfo (macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/com.coinheaven.app, Windows: %APPDATA%\com.coinheaven.app)
  5. Open the app and unlock it with your passphrase or the twelve words

If a computer is stolen

  • Lock or wipe it remotely (Find My / Find My Device)
  • Change your Apple/Microsoft/Google password and sign the device out
  • Revoke any AI or search API keys you gave Coin Heaven
  • Delete unencrypted exports from the device and any synced folders
  • Restore on a new computer from your backup
  • Beware of convincing messages that mention real merchants or balances
  • If your passphrase was weak, or you had no disk encryption and used "open automatically", start a fresh database with a new passphrase and re-import your statements

Do this before you need it

  • Twelve words on paper, away from the computer
  • Backup folder on another disk or a cloud drive
  • Disk encryption on (FileVault / BitLocker)
  • One test restore
