Having got all the various components and having prototyped quite a lot of the software the next job was to start putting things together. As most controls/displays/interface boards and so on had mounting holes I wanted to use the PCB pillars to mount them "standoff" from some kind of backing board. I did look at getting non-coppered FR4 board (like PCB) but I couldn't wait so I then looked around for a "backboard" to use. My wife, Joan, suggested a small wooden presentation box that contained various taster bottles of Taylor's Port that I had got one Christmas and that was now just storing some batteries...
I cut some slots and holes and began to sketch out a layout:
Then I bolted some bits and pieces to it...
And finally ended up with:
With the "hidden bit" looking like:
(and yes the stain in the wood is where some old battery had previously leaked - ho hum!)
