On our first meeting we learned the basic curriculum of the class and engaged in some exciting group activities together. The first activity was to build a support structure for a box of sodas with only toothpicks and gum drops. We learned that not only do we have to incorporate triangular designs for stability, we also have to increase the base area to spread out the weight. The second activity was to build a landing complex that ensures the safety of an egg with paper, pipe cleaners and marshmallows. Our group thought that the a wider cross-sectional area could decrease the speed of falling, but in reality it is much easier to build an envelope around the egg.
