Task Team WIGOS Metadata

6 April 2023 13-14:30 UTC

Agenda & Notes

  • Welcome, adoption of 2023-03-17-TT-WIGOSMD (5')

  • Secretariat updates (Anna)

  • (Joerg) the OSCAR management board discussed the difficulty with including some of the amendments and they questioned the fast-track as a procedure for changes. Sometimes it's not clear what impacts operations and what kind of operations and this is a gray area for interpretation and balance it with the requests for updates by the community. We should at least be mindful to include as many stakeholders as possible and support the requirements. (Gao) can the OSCAR Board weigh in on the operational impact? (Joerg) OSCAR is not the only user of the metadata (Franziska) additions are not problematic, but the introduction of tags has been difficult. It would be good to continue using paths while adding tags. Another issue is the geometry that's removed from the parameter name, because users cannot search by geometry without the parameter. When the impact is "HIGH" Franziska and Lucia will be invited to review and assess. (Anna) Can we get a list of all the applications using the WIGOS codes? (Joerg) there could be any one, e.g. some Nordic applications are working on their editions of metadata repos and are using WIGOS metadata in some way or another (Dave) also, OceanOPS... (Rainer) DWD is discussing use of (John) it's been suggested that all observations could apply to any application area and we can only guess on the impact and it's limiting to work ... (?) (Joerg) we can invite communities to take part in the evolution of WIGOS (John) have you considered using the WIGOS newsletter? (Joerg) the primary user of the newsletter is OSCAR and NWS, we should consider other options (Jitze) metadata should be included in the newsletter (Washington) we proposed an expert to work with this team on codes for water quality for new variables (Joerg) everyone in this group has a responsibility to inform and reach out to the communities (Gao) I support the use of WIGOS codes in some of the NASA projects, in particular the units table; Can we send out for review for a couple weeks before FT procedure for comments? At the data management level there is a compromise between accuracy and completeness (?)

  • WMDR evolution (Joerg): not much progress at the moment; there was suggestion to bring this up at the next INFCOM (in Spring 2024) and hopefully the internal discussions at the Secretariat come to a common understanding; (Jitze) is there a time schedule for this? (Joerg) we need a concrete proposal to discuss. (Gao) can we get a survey on what the community is doing with metadata and what they need? This could support the rationale for evolution.

  • not discussed: Recombine tables 1-01*, 5-02* https://github.com/wmo-im/wmds/issues/464
