Meeting Notes

1. Introduction

• Jeremy introduced the list of topics proposed for Monday's meeting. Participants were given 20 minutes to review and suggest priorities.

2. Topic Prioritization Proposals

• Participants shared their initial prioritization:

o Kai: F, A, E, D, C, B, G, H

o Rémy: F, Q, B, C

o Elena: Q, F, D, I, N

3. Discussion Highlights

  • Rémy noted that some topics, such as: D – Change Management for Global Services, and J – Fixed IP Address for Global Services are more relevant to ET-WISOP than ET-W2IT.

  • Tom responded that for topic D, the development aspects fall under ET-W2IT’s responsibility before transitioning to ET-WISOP.

  • Rémy clarified that the requirements should originate from ET-WISOP, and then ET-W2IT should address them accordingly.

4. Agreed Topic Priorities

Priority 1 (P1)

B. Implementation of Global Replay Service(s):

• Step 1: Endorse the specification (PR: link)
• Step 2: Official request from SG for Members to provide the service.
• Step 3: Canada and South Korea have offered to host the service.
• Step 4: Encourage usage, especially by ECMWF and other NWP centres.
• Canada can support implementation with an official request. Rémy noted such requests usually come from Members.
• Tom will update the specification and submit for approval via GitHub.
• ET-W2IT will review and endorse the final specification.

F. Metadata Management and Catalogue Synchronization:

• Recognized as a high-priority topic. • Discussion focused on metadata quality and synchronization between GDCs. • Tom noted ongoing efforts with CMA to address existing issues. • Xinquing committed to cleaning GDC China’s metadata by next week.

Q. Readiness for Metadata Validation (effective 1 September 2025):

• Confirmed as high priority. • Rémy emphasized the role of GISCs in validating metadata and urged them to start using existing tools now rather than waiting for finalized metrics or dashboards. Continuous improvement is expected.

Priority 2 (P2)

C. WIS2 Node Backup Mechanism:

• Rated as medium priority. • Rémy mentioned existing requests from Belize and Poland; a basic mechanism is already in place. • Discussion points: o Proposal to draft a section in the WIS2 Cookbook. o Use of virtual IP addresses considered as one option. o Agreed that this goes beyond documentation—it requires implementation changes in Global Brokers. o Some brokers (e.g. using Mosquitto) cannot support clustering, making this more complex.

Proposed steps:

• Step 1: ET-W2IT confirms the usefulness of a backup mechanism. [Agreed]
• Step 2: By end of 2025, agree on a mechanism (Météo-France has already tested with Belize).
• Step 3: Broker operators (Brazil, China, France, USA) to align on the agreed mechanism.
• Step 4: Update the WIS2 Guide and supporting documentation for INFCOM-4 approval.
• Step 5: Implement necessary changes at Global Broker level.

I/ Handling of discontinued data.

  • Procedures for retiring datasetes:
    -- update WCMP2 notification with an end-date?
    -- send WCMP2 delete notification?
  • Best practices and potential impact on subscribers (update the cookbook?)

5. Next Steps

• Jeremy will continue refining the prioritization list.
• Participants are encouraged to review and provide feedback.

6. Decisions Agreed

  1. Global Replay Service:
o Will be implemented in a phased approach, starting with specification endorsement and formal requests to Members.
o Canada and South Korea have volunteered to host the service.
  2. Metadata Management and Validation:
o High priority topic; active efforts underway.
o GDC China will be cleaned by next week.
o GISCs are expected to begin validation work using available tools immediately.
  3. WIS2 Node Backup:
o A backup mechanism is needed and useful.
o ET-W2IT will finalize and agree on the mechanism by the end of 2025.
o Documentation updates and implementation changes will follow.
  4. Clarification on Responsibilities:
o Topics such as Change Management and Fixed IPs for Global Services are primarily under ET-WISOP, but may require preparatory work by ET-W2IT.
