Name of Data Centre/Network: World Data Centre for Greenhouse Gases (WDCGG https://gaw.kishou.go.jp) Atsuya Kinoshita

Are DOIs or PIDs implemented in your Centre or Network?

If Yes, Please provide a description and example of what is implemented and name of the organization which maintains them.

If Not, Please provide information on any implementation plans (what, how and when), considerations, data originators and /or data users requests you are taking into account.

Not yet. WDCGG will assign DOIs for the dataset on WDCGG this fiscal year (until March 2021). We are just preparing to join as a member of JaLC (Japan Link Center: DOI Registration Agency in Japan). The members can register DOIs to their digital objects through RAs.

There are three items under consideration.

  • DOI granularity and nesting We are considering registering at three granularities. That is, all data on the WDCGG website, each gas species, and each dataset (one DOI for one dataset). How to show the Correspondence relations of DOIs on the WDCGG website is also under consideration.

  • Reassigned to each older version Only the latest version data is available on the WDCGG website. Therefore, DOI will remains the same even when the data version updated. However, there are some comments that WDCGG should mint separate DOIs to each versions. To give DOIs to older versions, we need to archive the data for all versions on WDCGG website. The number of DOIs to give will be huge. So we are looking for the best way.

  • Distinction of DOI given by WDCGG and/or the original researcher The original DOI by the data provider is prioritized, and original DOIs are already indicated on the current WDCGG website. The contributor can choose whether to get the DOI in WDCGG. At first, WDCGG will ask contributors via email if they want to get DOIs. And next, we create the DOI when we receive "Yes" reply or when no response by the deadline.

We have been asked by the contributor, "Do DOI be given to submitted data?". Also we inquiries from users regarding data usage, we think giving a DOI is effective in responding with these inquiries.

Update 25 March 2021

Atsuya Kinoshita presented short summary on the progress made by WDCGG in implementing DOIs since March 2021. DOIs provided by the data provider and reserved as the only DOI and no other DOI is provided by WDCGG. Two types of granularity of DOI are provided: a) for gas specie and b) data set. It could be provided at dataset level upon request of data provider. For each data set the same DOI will be used even if data set is updated, yearly fixed dataset from all stations. In addition WDCGG started providing data in NetCDF Data format in March 2021. Data users can choose data format between text data and NetCDF formats.

Name of Data Centre/Network: Atmospheric Science Data Center (ASDC) – one of NASA DAACs (Distributed Active Archive Centers) Makhan Virdi

Are DOIs or PIDs implemented in your Centre or Network?

Yes, ASDC and other DAACs have started to assign DOIs for airborne field studies. The DOIs are typically developed through discussions between DAACs and project principal investigators. The DOIs for data archived or to be archived at ASDC are given at the project level even for the projects with multiple field deployments, e.g., 10.5067/Suborbital/NAAMES/DATA001 or 10.5067/Suborbital/KORUSAQ/DATA01. This approach was strongly advocated by the project PIs with the intent to keep the data set as a package and to streamline the data citation for manuscript development. DAACs, however, raised the DOI specificity issue. One compromise solution proposed recently is to have a project level DOI and DOIs specific to each data product, which may involve 100+ DOIs for a large project. In addition, some other DAAC explored the manuscript DOI approach, i.e., assigning a static DOI to all data used to develop the manuscript. Hopefully, there will be a standard process established in a few years.

ASDC assigns DOI as per NASA’s EOSDIS guidelines. Datacite.org is used to register and assign DOI for data collections. For example, a data collection from the DISCOVER-AQ project can be found at https://search.datacite.org/works/10.5067/aircraft/discover-aq/aerosol-tracegas with the DOI https://doi.org/10.5067/aircraft/discover-aq/aerosol-tracegas and corresponding landing page at ASDC https://asdc.larc.nasa.gov/project/DISCOVER-AQ/DISCOVER-AQ_Aircraft_insitu_TraceGas_Data_1

This data set DOI may also be searched at data.nasa.gov, for example: https://data.nasa.gov/dataset/DISCOVER-AQ-P-3B-Aircraft-in-situ-Trace-Gas-Measur/ck3w-qa6s

Name of Data Centre/Network: Southern Hemisphere ADditional OZonesondes (SHADOZ) Network - from D. Kollonige

Are DOIs or PIDs implemented in your Centre or Network?

No not yet. We are going to obtain a SHADOZ project DOI as a whole to start. Our Goddard Earth Sciences Data Information Services Center (GES DISC, via David Meyer -manager) suggests using NASA Data Portal (https://data.nasa.gov ) & their curators for this process. We expect to do that this year (2020). A NASA DAAC (Distributed Active Archive Center) is not necessary for this as we support our own data archive and do not need their full services. NASA Data Portal should be acceptable for major publishers. We are considering individual DOIs for our 14 stations in the future. We have several data originators and some stations that are used individually that could be cited with their own DOI.

Update in February 2021: Administrative process of NASA for their implementation has started.

Name of Data Centre/Network: World Data Centre for Precipitation Chemistry (WDC-PC) - C. Lehmann

Are DOIs or PIDs implemented in your Centre or Network?

If Not, Please provide information on any implementation plans (what, how and when), considerations, data originators and /or data users requests you are taking into account.

No - Not currently. The WDC-PC has the capability to register data from ongoing monitoring at no cost through the University of Illinois - Illinois Data Bank (https://databank.illinois.edu). The Illinois Data Bank provides a landing internet URL for the DOI; the link to the data download URL appears as an external link in the record. The WDC-PC is evaluating the utility of registering its data sets through Zenodo (http://zenodo.org), which is funded by CERN and the European Union (OpenAIRE). The Zenodo repository registers DOIs, including the ability for versioning.
