NOTES

1. Approval of agenda and minutes of ET-ACDM 2023-6 meetings

Agenda approved.

2. GAW updates from Secretariat

Interviews for new Head of GAW held.

Changes in the WMO organigram: new Secretary General (SG), Deputy (SG) and Assistant (SG).

Intercomparison on O3 Brewer analysers in South America planned for Q1 2024.

Discussions with Secretariat staff linked to SC-IMT and MeteoSwiss about the problems to update metadata in GAWSIS by GAW Contributing Networks.

3. Updates on topic hierarchy for WIS2

  • Link shared with the applications/modelling community
  • Discussion held with forecasters in aerosols and Sand and Dust Storms Group about what would be the implications adopting WIS 2.0, at the moment exist a large number of variables (+100) and different application areas which seems to be suggested by forecasters and modellers.
  • Suggestions:
    • having a single source for aerosols, instead of having 5 different application areas with different Expert Teams as sources.
    • WIGOS and WIS2.0 should use the same vocabulary.
    • WIS 2.0 would be set it up initially and then test it in operational procedures, there will be time to update it based on user experience

4. Follow-up on F.A.I.R.ness of GAW-related data infrastructure

  • Self-assessment of ET-ACDM members and observers

  • https://github.com/wmo-im/et-acdm/wiki/F.A.I.R.ness Several members for the group participated in the survey:

  • ICOS:

    • open data policy allows access to ontology and metadata using SPARQL
    • persistent identifiers for all the data included raw one,
    • everything set up for machine to machine,
    • 1 or 2 times per year final quality control data releases (data level 2).
  • MeteoSwiss:

    • metadata portal only, not data.
    • Ideas on how interoperable is with OSCAR/Surface app?
    • Persistent identifiers for main product: station report
    • License linked to the use of the portal
    • Difficult to follow many of the standards listed, how can these be standards if they are so many? Suggestions:
      • common approaches could be found out when merging research infrastructures, then the number of standards can be reduced
      • Purpose of the questionnaire: awareness, converge to common standard in order not to have multiple approaches
  • EUBREWNET:

    • Only section about identifiersand metadata completed, further progress in January 24
  • SHADOZ:

    • using DOI, at the moment observing other data centres for guidance on how to progress on FAIRness.
  • MPLNET:

    • Difficulties filling the questionnaire due to NASA structure where data centres manage data and to the lack of awareness of the FAIR principles.
    • Suggestion to offload data management from MPLNET management because of the large amount of workload linked to data management
  • NDACC:

    • Needs Co-Chairs to fill together the questionnaire, expected mid Jan 24.
  • General feeling among US/NASA members:

    • Data management requires resources which are not available at the moment. NASA management struggling to understand those requirements and failing to resource the data management FAIRness adaptation.
    • NASA data centres designed for field campaign or satellite data not for serving a network like SHADOZ, MPLNET or NDACC.
  • Conclusions:

    • Questionnaire showed what is needed to become FAIR.
    • Evaluation required to find out what FAIRness pays off to the institution.
    • Check different technologies used by each institution and try to converge on a limited number of technologies and implement them.
    • Assessment of the fips received could be done taking the fips links.
