Notes

Attendance: Jörg Klausen (JK), Kaisa Lakkala (KL), Gao Chen (GC), Wenche Aas (WA) (representing NILU), Tom Kralidis (TK), Teruo Kawasaki (TEK), Alex Vermeulen (AV), Jeanette Wild (JW) and Sergi Moreno (SM) (Secretariat)

1. Agenda

Agenda modified: MF not attending so JK suggested to postpone point 5 and start with point 3 because TK needed to leave early. Minutes from ET ACDM 2023 4 · wmo-im/et-acdm Wiki (github.com) approved.

2. Updates from Secretariat:

SM will attend NDACC meeting in September, enquiry about GAW-NDACC formal relationship:

Miscellaneous discussion:

JK: metadata linkage NDACC-GAWSIS broken since 2016, however there is a strong ambition to be reestablished.

Issues: How to implement principles of single source of data (Architecture).

TK: There have been several investigations for data integration: formats required for each data centre, vertical resolution is not always the same. Different formats 'translation' require a lot of time.

JW: A metadata base (GAWSIS?) pointing to different sources of data.

JK: perhaps add something on topic 4. Specifying the ambitions for the next period. Actionable items. We need to work on this. Interoperability. Metadata repository where data can be found and managed.

Action: SM will discuss the issue of re-establishing the metadata exchange between NDACC and GAWSIS. This has stopped to work with the re-launch of GAWSIS in 2016, which has led to completely outdated metadata in GAWSIS.

3. Topic hierarchy for WIS 2.0

JK: TK needs a consolidated feedback from this team. Task team in NWP proposing their own topic hierarchy, also for hydrology. WIS 2.0 in pilot phase until end of the year. Need to lock down an iteration, we need to make the first move.

JK: who is deciding about the hierarchy?

TK: ET-Metadata and TT-WISMD managed by TK. ET-ACDM would make a proposal, the TT would review it and look at the other properties from other communities, consistency.

JK: have you seen other proposals?

TK: NWP: https://github.com/wmo-im/tt-nwpmd For the most part they are different.

WA: in Total Atmospheric Deposition we don’t really observe! So observation/aerosols/reactive + analysis prediction.

Group edited the page: topic hierarchy for WIS2

Two options proposed for the WIS 2.0 topic hierarchy:

  • greenhouse gases
  • aerosol
  • reactive gases
  • precipitation chemistry
  • ozone and UV radiation

Or:

  • atmospheric constituents or, alternatively:
    • gases
    • aerosol particles and clouds
  • vertical exchange of surface flux densities
  • energy flux densities to/from surface
  • atmospheric processes and kinetics

GC: OH Reactivity 1/s would have a problem in both sides. And how about photolytic coefficients? O3 + hv =>O(1D) + O2

AV: General question: who are the users?

TK: users are consumers of WIS 2.0 all the NWP centers. Earth system grid foundation, ocean community. Mass market. Data will be available in wis 2.0 catalogue. Mass market: google, Microsoft, etc

TK: level 8 atmospheric composition and level 9 gases, aerosols and clouds

WA: Too much hierarchy with observations that are not available.

Actions: Review and comment draft Proposal
