Team B Notes
Define tangible objectives to improve data F.A.I.R.ness
-
F: Develop WIGOS and WIS2 variable metadata standards with persistent and controlled vocabulary with adequate measurement coverage and consistent with I-ADOPT guidelines and literature terminology. OSCAR surface requires improvements with user interface and the upload API to populate the database and provide accurate, up-to-date query results.
-
A: data should be open, no credentials/access control. Some data may require licensing in this case. Enable machine-to-machine accessibility with predictable process
-
I: free and open standards. Tooling/software/reference implementation. Best practices. Reference implementation. How to translate CF to GEOMS for specific applications? Map/translate WIGOS variable metadata to existing ontologies when applicable, e.g., CF, ACTRIS
-
R: license should not be too restrictive, harmonization between WIS2 and WIGOS metadata Use WIGOS variable metadata standards to unambiguously identify measurements with proper description of measurand and measurement, including sampling, sample treatment, detection, and reporting
Review objectives of WIGOS 2040, identify challenges and opportunities for GAW ACDM
WIGOS vision 2040 is too large, dedicated meeting would be an option. No special items for LIDAR area, just more data is expected. Action: ET will develop and maintain mappings for relevant standards. Provide use cases for vocabulary. Discover other existing ontologies. FAIR principles discussion should be fitted to our domain. Should be compliant with Unified Data Policy, underpinned with licenses. ET will pay particular attention on how UDP would be underpinned by licenses. Data providers are responsible for the licensing. Proposal: Metadata should be licensed CC0 for open use, otherwise problems could rise. Clarifying the requirements for licensing metadata. (for example adding an statement)
Remote sensing upper-air observations
-
The evolution and trends section is not capturing increasing use of HSRL systems for accurate profiling of aerosol properties. These will likely outpace use of Raman into the future, and are also being combined together with micro pulse DIAL systems for combined capability.
-
Remove the ceilometer statement, and replace with following new bullets:
-
Commercially available backscatter lidar systems have been providing information on cloud and aerosol profiles and properties, and evolution of mixed layer height for a long time and will continue into the future as lower cost options for more dense surface-based profiling.
-
Ceilometers have provided information on low cloud base height and mixed layer height for a long time, and more advanced ceilometers will increasingly be used to provide information on cloud and aerosol profiles.
-
Newer low cost DIAL systems may be able to provide information on cloud and aerosol profiles in the lower atmosphere.
-
Add new bullet: Ozone lidars have increasing capability to provide lower atmosphere profiling and the number of sites capable of profiling from near surface to the stratosphere will likely increase over time.
Atmospheric Composition upper-air observations
- Replace current lidar bullet with following: As lidar networks continue to expand, more lidar sites will be able to retrieve profiles of aerosol properties.
