Notes

  1. Alberto Redondos presented EUBREWNET work on linking data with WOUDC and NDACC.

Joining EUBREWNET, data levels, data types, processing, reprocessing, archiving, sharing. Discussion on use of DOIs by EUBREWNET led to proposal to develop Best practices/Recommendations for assignment and use of DOI (PID) for GAW datacenters and contributing networks. http://evdc.esa.int/documentation/doi-docs/. Alex noted that it is actually a weakness in the Datacite DOI metadata model that it does not provide a link to the digital resource itself. Work will be carried out within following couple of months, consultations will include review of used cases, existing practices, objectives, link to FAIR practices, how they are mint and used and speakers will be invited at next meetings. Markus will leave, Dietrich, Alex (some assistance from Maggie Hellström involved in RDA on this topic), Gao and others to contribute.

  1. Proposal to move from GAW ID to WIGOS SI. GAW IDs are 3 letters station IDs, used to be managed by GAWSIS but conflicts have been found with other programs using their 3 letters for identification. WMO Members’ accepted practices under WIGOS which is under WMO wide implementation the use of globally unique WIGOS Station Identifiers which are managed by OSCAR/Surface. Such step will align the WDCs with WMO wide Station ID system (WSI).

Alex: In ICOS we just implemented the WIGOS IDs for atmosphere stations in our station landing pages and other metadata, see for example https://meta.icos-cp.eu/resources/stations/AS_HTM.

5.Stoyka presented main points on status and development plan for the new GAW IP

Suggestions made:

  • WIS and WIGOS. WMO should find a strategy how these 2 could join forces in a better way, e.g. by improving interoperability. That would make it easier for GAW partners to contribute.
  • More cross-cutting exchange between WGs in GAW. Some connections for information exchange have been lost when introducing the last reform of WGs, and cross-cutting information exchange could address that problem.
  • More harmonized structure, more consistency of WDC in terms on access, what is available, data format, MD- we work on for some time. Perhaps virtual federated structure could be a solution.
  • Role of data center or repository
  1. In-person meeting in 2022: in November. Doodle will be made to determine most suitable time for all. Host/place to be decided as Kjetil (NILU), Alex (ICOS) and Stoyka (WMO) volunteered.

  2. AOB - NDACC might hold its meeting week of 14 November, ICOS meeting- to try to avoid overlaps.

  3. Next meeting (tentative): 5 July 2022, 12-14 UTC
