Agenda
1. Welcome and approval of minutes from previous meeting
Agenda and minutes from previous meeting tentatively accepted by the group.
2. GAW updates from Secretariat
Progress on the GAW programme reorganisation was highlighted, including ongoing consultations with Expert Teams and Standing Advisory Committees.
Members were encouraged to review the GAW reorganized proposal slides, GAW Reorganization Document with Questions documents and provide feedback ahead of the GAW Symposium.
Action: ET-ACDM members to review the GAW reorganisation documents and submit comments to the Secretariat.
GAW Workspace introduction
The Secretariat presented the new GAW Workspace as the primary platform for internal collaboration.
The Workspace will progressively replace legacy systems used for document sharing and internal coordination.
Members were encouraged to:
Use the Workspace for document exchange
Keep information on activities and outputs up to date
Report any access or permission issues
Action: Members to report Workspace access or editing issues to the Secretariat.
3. Approve WIS2 topic hierarchy: https://github.com/wmo-im/wis2-topic-hierarchy/issues/233
WIS 2.0 hierarchy approved with no objections from the audience.
Question about how WIS 2.0 handles data that has licensed information not underlying WMO Resolution 40.
Action: Tom will present at the next meeting addressing that issue.
4. Review of the previous meeting actions:
- 4.1 Feedback from ET-ACDM to GAW reorganisation proposal GAW reorganized proposal slides, GAW Reorganization Document with Questions
Action: request Expert Team members to reflect on their experience of collaboration with WMO, and especially with GAW — what has worked well, what could be improved, and which topics would be valuable to discuss during the Symposium.
Low productivity and limited reference to the Work Plan were noted, possibly due to insufficient specificity and tasks too broad.
One desired outlet from the group discussion would be a common shared data access portal. WIS 2.0 presents an opportunity to work towards that.
Previous discussions concerning the removal of login requirements for accessing data portals, as well as the implementation of FAIR principles, were highlighted as examples of productive discussions and tangible outcomes.
Remarks on onboarding time for new members, as a caution against frequent renewals, and questions on WMO data-sharing recommendations were also raised.
Suggestion to prepare a WMO/GAW WDC onboarding guideline.
WMO recommends the use of WDC for data storage, WIGOS metadata standard and WIS 2.0 for data exchange, however, it is a heterogeneous system and there are also Contributing Networks data centres and other standards available. In this respect Barcelona Supercomputing Centre has developed GHOST as a harmonisation tool for GAW data.
Comments on Data formats: CF compliance alone is insufficient; clear principles are needed on required global and variable attributes, with a focus on instrument-independent structures.
Metadata: “Rich metadata” under FAIR principles must be clearly defined and is measurement-dependent (e.g. aerosols vs. trace gases).
AI: AI tools could support keyword mapping, metadata consistency checks, and faster data ingest, helping address data-center bottlenecks.
Suggestion to prepare a questionnaire to be shared during the Symposium. It should include questions on data formats, data accessibility, and the level of knowledge of, or user experience with, the WDC.
Suggestion to have a look at funding opportunities in Digital Europe
