2. GAW updates from Secretariat
Recent joint SAG meeting (SAG TAD, SAG RG, SAG Aerosols + ET Chairs):
Strategic goals for 2025-2026:
- Consolidate the GAW data chain (guidelines, Central facilities, ETs). Suggestion to assess the data quality in the Data Centres.
- Support GCOS, G3W and Early Warnings for All implementation.
- Assessments and scientific publications making sure GAW is acknowledged and those doing observations recognised.
- Training and capacity development activities enhanced (New ET established).
- Preparation for GAW Symposium (Possible dates 1-20 March 2026).
Other issues discussed:
- Discussion about the interaction between the ETs and SAGs.
- Suggestion to clarify the roles of the GCOS and G3W: Simplification of ECVs and new advisory groups for data and modeling in G3W.
Comments by Jörg: Some experts who are relatively new to the GAW Programme are not well-informed about its inner workings, which creates confusion and dilutes its identity. Suggestion to prepare a regular onboarding activity to support the sense of GAW community.
3. CAMS25 Updates
Main objective of the CAMS25 project is to improve GAWSIS and to update the metadata on GAW observations. The current metadata information is partially outdated, and it is difficult to extract information to assess the network status.
Data submission information will be used to assess the GAW station status.
Due to the large number of GAW World Data Centres and other DCs from Contributing Networks, the idea is to subcontract MeteoSwiss and Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) to re-establish a link between the DCs and GAWSIS and to improve the maps.
GHOST will harvest information, that information will be contrasted with the actual DCs and will be shown as a station assessed status, similarly to OSCAR Surface assessment process.
Another expected outcome of the project is the NRT data test. A dedicated work package (WP) will be established for this purpose, involving some data centers (DCs) that are either providing or planning to provide NRT data.
Part of the project's budget will be allocated to invite all relevant DCs to meet in person to discuss the best way forward, also in terms of a more holistic approach to GAW data management. The first in person meeting will be held as soon as possible, although not before June, Secretariat to send a Doodle poll.
4. AOB, topics for the next meeting
Use of GAWID at DCs: A GAWID is reserved during the application process of a station, and presumably also during data submission of these prospective stations at some DCs. In case a station is not approved as a regional GAW station, these IDs must be removed. Only GAW stations can have a 3-letter GAWID as a program-specific ID. Please take note and implement this accordingly.
**Action for the Team: It is best if WDCs accept such ID only after a station has been approved. **
Next meeting: 11 February 2025, 12:00-13:30 UTC
