Provisional agenda

Agenda approved.

1. Approval of minutes from previous meeting

ET-ACDM 2024-6: 12 September 2024

Action: to review the SG-FIT meeting highlights

GAW community could be interested in big data access/processing and required standards for that purpose.

Also, discussions include data proximate compute, to bring user to data instead of user downloading all the data; and analysis ready data, to reduce the accounting that data users have to do.

Minutes adopted.

2. GAW updates from Secretariat

Training Course on Seamless Prediction of Air Pollution in Africa

Training on greenhouse gases in Bukit Kototabang, Indonesia

Minutes EPAC SSC Meeting 01-10-2024.docx

• Changes in the Chairperson of different groups.

• New group on Capacity Building approved.

• GAW SIP 2024-2027 to be published.

3. WDCGG Updates

Kawasaki-san presented new format to be implemented at WDCGG for the new year.

Suggestions:

• To consider a transition period offering old and new data formats at the same time.

• To keep old format structure adding additional parts.

• Ask SAG GHG for approval.

• Use a Change Management Plan.

4. Finalising WIS 2.0 topic hierarchy (all, 30')

Each domain to identify data sets to be tested in WIS 2.0

https://github.com/wmo-im/et-acdm/issues/24

Q&A:

How deep should we go and how many subtopics should we have?

There must be a balance between a broad topic category, which could require to sort out the information locally, and a too detailed category, which could be a problem when changes are required.

At this stage, it’s preferable to keep the topic hierarchy high and brief, with the possibility of adding new sublevels, than to start with a very detailed hierarchy.

ET-ACDM should collaborate with different SAGs to define the topic hierarchy for each area.

Action: Tom to show a presentation about WIS 2.0: catalogue discovery, evaluation and subscription.

5. Follow up with other open issues (all, 10')

Agree with each GAW SAG on level 0 data #23

Two definitions proposed, one for surface based and the other for satellite based data.

Action: Kaisa to summarise the Team’s comments and prepare a questionnaire for the SAGs.

Roadmap: Circulate the questionnaire through the SAGs. Assess the availability and volume of level 0 data, the requirements for reprocessing and then recommend SSC EPAC to include the storage of level zero data whenever is possible as a requirement.

Jörg urged the Team to think about the definition of the different levels of data, and try to harmonise as much as possible. This would influence the decision of the Members to include those definitions in the WMO Codes Registry. On another hand, there are questions about what level zero data should be archived and where.

Some instruments, like celiometers for E-Profile, pre-process the data so they can’t agree with the level 0 data archiving.

Suggestion to ask SSC EPAC/WMO to recommend weather services to prioritise instruments providing level 0 zero data, instead of an instrument ‘product’.

6. AOB, topics for the next meeting (10')

  • 5 December 12-13:00 UTC
