Agenda

  1. Review of actions from previous meeting (https://github.com/wmo-im/WSI/wiki/TT-WSI-Meeting-28.10.2020)
  2. Survey for NWP Centres

Notes

The team reviewed the actions from previous meetings:

  • TT-WSI-2-A1 Analyse WSI data on GTS to find out if there are any WSIs not registered on OSCAR and GTS headings not compliant with GTS Manual (Ioannis, Enrico, Timo) (ongoing)
  • TT-WSI-2-A2 Start drafting a survey for NWP Centres. (main topic of this meeting )
  • TT-WSI-1-A3 Resolve issue of the secondary key (Jose-Mauro, Timo) (no discussion on this action)

Enrico introduced the first draft of the survey, clarifying that it is in an early stage and significant work needs to be done before submitting to the Centers. Some considerations that need to be taken into account in the further development of the survey.

  1. The list of Centres that SC-ESMP is providing is not only NWP Centers and we need to design the survey on different type of applications: nowcasting, databases, data assimilation...
  2. There are already data with WSI on the GTS and we need to ask the Centers what are their processing abilities and problems with these data.
  3. There are two types of data WSI+TSI and WSI only. We need to ask the same questions for both. We expect that WSI+TSI should not be a problem.
  4. We need to ask Centers their plans for migrating their systems to WSI and if they can meet the 2024 deadline.
  5. We need to take the opportunity of the survey to advertise the WIGOS operational plan for what concerns the WSI.
  6. There is the need to make a plan for the retirement of legacy Vol. A. Some questions on the survey would help to decide the timing.

Action TT-WSI-3-A1. Draft of survey ready by 22 January. (Enrico, Thorsten, Kai, Ioannis)

The team discussed the difference between the TAC to BUFR migration and the TSI to WSI migration. The key difference is that during TAC to BUFR we were able to ask for keeping parallel TAC/BUFR transmission for longer to adapt the systems. With TSI to WSI we don't have the opportunity to leave the TSI for new stations because they will only have WSI. Therefore, the Centers not able to process WSI are going to lose data from the new stations.

An Other suggested question was if a producer has data that cannot be sent on GTS because they don't have an identifier. However, this would be for another survey for producers, not NWP centres.

TT-WSI-3-A2. Make a list of Centres for the survey. (Enrico, Ioannis)

A proposal to organize a workshop on WSIs was accepted by the Team and it will be discussed in the next meetings.

TT-WSI-3-A3. Discuss the organization of a workshop on WSI. (TT-WSI)
