Hardware options
CAN-Gateway sofware is running on a special microcontroller board. Thereby there are three options:
- Recommended: CAN-Gateway development board, is sold at WLED SHOP for 45,90 € (incl. enclosure) plus shipment costs (worldwide delivery). Also available at MyHome-Control Shop (housing available separately, shipment only in Germany).
- CAN-Gateway Board V5
- Olimex ESP32-EVB(-EA) Board
CAN-Gateway development board
This is the recommended option. The datasheet can be found there. The CAN-Gateway software can be installed on this board with a just few clicks. No special software skills are required. This board has ethernet interface, "plug-and-play" CAN RJ45 interfaces, micro SD card slot, USB interface, enclosure. Attention! The additional CAN interface on this board is not equipped as standard: a special BG02E interface (for HomeVents with simple control module) is only possible with additional components soldered! This option is available at MyHome-Control Shop
CAN-Gateway Board V5
This board is specially developed for CAN-Gateway software.
Schematics / layout: CAN-Gatewax HW V5
Olimex ESP32-EVB(-EA) Board
CAN-Gateway software can be installed (flashed) on ESP32-EVB(-EA) board from Olimex. You can by ESP32-EVB(-EA) board from Olimex and then install the demo version of CAN-Gateway software by yourself.
Advantages of ESP32-EVB(-EA) board compared to CAN-Gateway board v5:
- Ethernet (LAN) as an alternative to WiFi (initial configuration is always via WiFi, but then you can switch to ethernet/LAN)
- -EA version with external WiFi antenna
- Metal box is available from Olimex for -EA version
Drawbacks of ESP32-EVB(-EA) board compared to CAN-Gateway board v5:
- No RJ45 connectors for Hoval CAN-Bus, only screw terminals
- SD-Card: no reliable automatic mount/unmount on insert (but can be done manually, after reset is always automatically)
- External power source is required, no option for power supply by Hoval CAN-Bus (5V/1A USB power supply does the job)
- No BG02E interface option (not relevant for most of the users)
- nu jumper for CAN terminating resistance, soldering iron would be required, but is not needed in most cases
