TotemTech ToonTech Zouna ACE BSSTech Opal Timeline - widberg/fmtk GitHub Wiki

This page contains a list of known games that use the Zouna game engine in chronological order. It was put together using original research by Zouna Underground Discord community members.

Brief History

Zouna, also known as TotemTech (the name of the entire software suite), ToonTech (nickname given to the engine by BigSky Interactive), Asobo Conception Engine (the name of Asobo Studio's version of the engine used mainly in marketing around the late 2000s, but is also used as the official name of the engine as of the 2020s), BSSTech (the name of Black Sheep Studio's version of the engine), or Opal (the name of Ubisoft Montreal's version of the engine) is a game engine that Kalisto Entertainment originally developed for the cancelled Sega Dreamcast and later PlayStation 2 game Totem. After the game's cancellation, the engine was deemed quality enough to be reused for other projects.

A few years later, Kalisto Entertainment shut down, and several of the Zouna-based projects ended up being finished in 2002 and 2003 by other game companies, with direct involvement of former Kalisto developers. Afterwards, however, several game companies ended up keeping Zouna for further game development. These companies were: Asobo Studio (which still uses Zouna to this day), Black Sheep Studio (which stopped using Zouna in favor of Unity and Unreal in the 2010s), and Ubisoft Montreal (which sporadically used it for a few game releases).

It can be argued that Asobo Studio's games are the most memorable of these to many people, with part of what brings the interest being that Asobo has made various sorts of games with Zouna, ranging from movie licensed games, to the ambitious and experimental driving game FUEL, and more recently the Plague Tale series and the newest entries in the Microsoft Flight Simulator series. Others have expressed interest in BigSky Interactive's Nickelodeon licensed games or Ubisoft Montreal's now shut-down multiplayer game The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot.

Timeline

Not every platform for every game uses Zouna, but at least one platform for each game does.

Instead of putting bff as a bullet point under every game, I will mention here that it works with file formats from every game. Also, instead of linking to every piece of documentation or file format pattern, I will say that ImZouna, the Chum World wiki, and zouna-templates-docs have many formats documented for many games. See the Reverse Engineering Tools page for a list of tools for PC, GameCube, Wii, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, and Xbox 360 games.

See also the Zouna BigFile Format Timeline for a visual representation.
