On carbon capture, growing season and related stuff - vvandermeersch/climategrowthshifts GitHub Wiki

Dow et al. 2022:

  • dendrometers and tree-rings (and differentiate diffuse porous and ring porous species... should we consider this trait?)
  • warm spring increases photosynthesis and advances the timing of stem diameter growth but no effect on total growth
  • because growth deceleration (mid-summer) is not driven by photosynthesis limitation, but likely by other stuff: water stress, nutrients, day length or sink saturation
  • so, where is the extra carbon fixed during years with warm spring? could potentially be allocated to more-carbon dense wood (e.g. improved cell thickening, or higher ratio late-wood/early-wood), but unlikely
  • maybe extra carbon goes to enhanced respiration, NSC, foliage, roots? Anyway, these have generally shorter residence times than woody growth
  • but potentially it could still increase the "biophysical potential for annual tree growth" (like if you improve your root system, and thus get more nutrients, you may retrieve limitations on woody growth?)
