Meeting with Alana (6 Oct 2025) - vvandermeersch/climategrowthshifts GitHub Wiki
It's 9 November and Lizzie is finally transcribing notes so ... may not be ideal!
We asked Alana about plant anatomy and stuff
- Heartwood -- amazing for carbon storage; primary forests have more of this
- We should look up Valentina's paper (not sure which one now)
- Rays -- this is where you (as a plant) put starch, plants cannot move starch (then it says 'cannot move sugar (osmolyte)' but I wonder if I mean that...)
- Great quote: "A lot of trees stop growing in July, unless they don't."
- There is not a good ray development signal with VPD
- Speaking of which, Phynwald had an irrigation experiment to look at carbon and is now starting a VPD x irrigation experiment!
- Where is the carbon in trees above ground? No one knows, but Alana guesses: 35% heartwood, 15% in leaves, 50% in wood
- Ray density = embolism replacement
