Fire - velour/wrecked GitHub Wiki

Fire is a staple. If you are taking the standard approach (signal a plane, wait for a boat) then you need to make a big signal fire. You also need fire to cook food and to ward off predators. You can gather sticks to make small fires, or you can gather logs (heavier--may need a cart to do this efficiently) to make a bigger, longer-lasting fire. Maybe fire can dry wet items.

Fire spreads to adjacent squares that contain combustible (and not wet) material. The jungle may be burnable, but it should take a lot of fire and a long time to start it on fire. Once lit, jungle never goes out, so you lose a square that may have provided berries and sticks and wildlife that you could have used. Also, bigger fires may damage the player if they come too close. The damage radius of a fire increases with the size of the fire, so if the player manages to start the jungle on fire then they are probably going to burn.

Early on, the difficulty in starting a fire is twofold. First, you need to collect enough fuel to keep it going for a reasonable amount of time (maybe one bundle of sticks burns for 30 seconds). Second, it takes about 15-30 seconds to start sticks on fire without matches or a lighter. If you get attacked (by a lobster or crab) during this time then your lighting is interrupted, so you should make sure that the enemies are cleared off the beach before starting a fire.
