Concept - veerleprins/frontend-applications GitHub Wiki

The concept / theme for this data visualization is parking an electric car in the Netherlands.

Mindmap

First a call was started with the support group to create a mind map. The intention is to see new insights that can lead to a concept. In the mind map of my support group we looked at different perspectives for the theme 'Cars in the city', such as accessibility, environmental pollution, parking rates. This mind map is shown below: De auto in de stad - Mindmap RDW data inzichten

Main question

First I came up with the idea to visualize the main question below:

What does the parking option for electric cars in public parking facilities in the Netherlands look like?

The problem with this main question is that it is a fairly complex main question. Based on the feedback I received from @razpudding, I decided to formulate my question slightly differently. I also made my research question more interesting by involving accessibility. After this my main question changed to:

What about parking an electric car compared to parking as a disabled person in the Netherlands?

Later I received feedback on my concept, among other things from the client. It emerged that it is difficult to compare parking as a disabled person with parking with an electric car. For this reason I have adapted my main question again. For this reason I changed my main question to:

What about parking an electric car in the Netherlands?

After this, a lecture was given by Suus ten Voorde, a former CMD-student about insights for an interesting main question. I decided to change my research question to the question:

What if tomorrow everyone suddenly has an electric car?

Unfortunately, while creating my visualizations, I found out that it would be an awful lot of work to visualize this. For this reason I decided to switch the research question back to the research question for Suus's college. So my ultimate main question became:

What about parking an electric car in the Netherlands?

Hypothesis / My assumption

I think there are already quite a few electric cars around in the Netherlands. Especially since it has been in the news a lot in recent years. I also think that there are already many charging points in the parking garages, at least two per garage.

Sub questions:

For the main question I came up with a number of sub questions: 1.How many electric cars are there in the Netherlands?
My assumption is that there are already quite a few electric cars around. For example, I think that at least 20 percent of all cars in the Netherlands are electric. 2. What is the ratio of normal parking spaces and electric charging parking spaces in the Netherlands?
My assumption is that there are still more normal parking spaces in the Netherlands than there are electric charging parking spaces. I think the ratio is 1/10. 2. Where are parking facilities for electric cars in the Netherlands?
My assumption is that there are more parking facilities for electric cars in the larger cities such as Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

Required datasets & variables

To answer these questions with the visualisations, I used the following datasets from the RDW:

The variables I need:

  • AreaId
  • AreaDesc
  • ChargingPointCapacity
  • Location
  • Merk

Sketches of the visualization:

Before creating the visualization using the code, it is important to consider how I want to create my visualization. For this reason, various sketches have been made. I have shown these below:
