Redirects - ucsf-ckm/ucsf-library-ux-and-web-documentation GitHub Wiki
Policy
- If URLs must change, add a redirect
- To optimize site performance, remove any redirects after two years
- If someone reports an old link as broken, re-add the redirect for a year while also asking them to use the current URL going forward
Main Library site
We can redirect any of our own pages from https://www.library.ucsf.edu/ to a new URL. This is enabled by using theWordPress plugin Redirection.
URL changes usually require redirects
To change the URL of a page, choose Dashboard > Pages > Quick Edit
The parent dropdown and the slug are the places you might need to edit to change something like https://www.library.ucsf.edu/about/zsfg
to https://www.library.ucsf.edu/zsfg
Zendesk Help Center
When you update the title of an article, the canonical URL will change to include a new slug that matches the new title. However, your end users can still navigate to a URL with the old slug, or with no slug at all. See Can I edit article URLs?.

In case you need to request a redirect from ITS in the future, here's how: Go to help.ucsf.edu, click/touch/tap/select/use "Request Specific Services", then "Web Requests", then "Redirect Registration Request". Fill out that form.
