General Purpose Database Programs

Bullet/REXX — DBF/DBT/NLS/external database engine.

"Bullet/REXX is an interface to the database engine called Bullet. It closely follows the compiler-version of Bullet in programming so any Bullet programmer can be up and using Bullet/REXX in just a few minutes -- as long as it takes to read this file. New Bullet programmers will have to learn Bullet first, but REXX makes this as easy as possible. If you need a database engine, you'll want to check out this product. One thing Bullet is more than anything else is fast. There's nothing faster! For example, the compiled version of Bullet is up to 700 times faster than MS's Access DBMS on inserts, and even the REXX version can reindex files at the rate of 1 million records/minute using a typical desktop PC."

Package includes C source code.

Author: Cornel Huth (1996).

ORexx/SQL Object Framework

"The ORexx/SQL Object Framework is a set of ORexx classes which encapsulate Mark Hessling's Rexx/SQL interface to SQL databases.

The Rexx/SQL interface provides cross platform (OS/2, UNIX, Win 95/NT), RDBMS independent access to SQL databases through a loadable external rexx library. The ORexx/SQL Object Framework extends this functionality by providing an extensible Object Oriented interface to Rexx/SQL on platforms with ORexx implementations (OS/2, Win 95/NT & Linux). The Framework further simplifies SQL database access by managing database connections and queries for the programmer and through its built in error handling facilities.

The framework can be used in two ways, either as an OO wrapper for the Rexx/SQL interface or as a Streams based interface to a SQL database. Either of these interfaces can be used as the basis for more complex, reusable, application specific classes.

When used as wrapper classes, you create connection, table and result table objects as needed and use the methods provided by these objects to query and update database tables. This gives you access to the entire functionality of the Rexx/SQL interface.

When using the Streams interface, you create SQLStream objects which create and manage other SQL objects as needed. SQLStream objects allow you to access a database using an interface similar to that which standard Stream objects provide.

In addition to providing an OO interface to Rexx/SQL, the classes have built in exception handling which can be customized or overridden. Using the Framework's exception handling eliminates the need for inline error checking and allows the programmer to write code which is easier to read and maintain."

Author: John Blumel (1997-1998).

1998-05-18: v1.1. Free under LGPL 2.0 license.

Find orexxsql.zip (42.4K) in the Hobbes archive: dev/orexx.

REXXGDB2 — REXX API for DB2/2.

"REXXGDB2.DLL is a library of REXX functions for IBM OS/2 (WARP) that allow REXX programs to manipulate data in IBM Database 2 for OS/2 (DB2/2) database tables through SQL statements.

These REXX functions are designed to perform some SQL-specific tasks, rather than as a common REXX DB2/2 API for all SQL statements like IBM's SQLEXEC (which is included with each copy of IBM DB2/2).

The design allows the REXX functions to use static SQL (when they were built) and to be fine-tuned separately which make them overall faster compared to SQLEXEC."

Author: Simon Husin / Global Automation Co. (1995-1997).

1997-08-10: v1.30.

Find rexxgdb2.zip (131.8K) in the Hobbes archive: dev/rexx.

Rexx/SQL — A Rexx interface to SQL databases.

"Rexx/SQL provides Rexx programmers with a consistent, simple, yet powerful interface to SQL databases. Multiple connections to different databases from different vendors can be made in the one Rexx program. Multiple statements can be open on each database connection at the one time.

Databases supported by Rexx/SQL include Oracle, DB2, MySQL, and SQLite. Rexx/SQL also supports access to ODBC datasources. This means that you can use Rexx/SQL to access databases such as SQL Server and Access, as well as other products such as Excel."

Author: Mark Hessling, Australia (1995-2006).

2012-10-28: v2.6β3. Free under LGPL 2.0 license.

Go to the SourceForge project page for Rexx/SQL for downloads or the Rexx/SQL website for docs. The Hobbes archive have the same downloads located in dev/rexx.
