FTL

"FTL is a program to help anyone running a FTP site (via FTPD). FTPD has only one way to generate a log of user activity, with the "-t" option. The tracefile generated is not very useful. There is too much logged (who cares about PORT and STRU commands) and it's not very readable. FTL will take one of these tracefiles, read though it, and provide a much more readable log of server usage, along with oversall statistics (ie files transferred, bytes downloaded, etc)."

FTPPM Visual REXX frontend

"Are you tired of re-typing the same information at all time when FTPing to a remote host? The TCP/IP FTPPM "Remote Logon" procedure reads your NETRC file searching for "User" and "Password" for any defined host name. However, you are supposed to type in the "Host" information anyway. I think it's a very annoying feature of FTPPM. This REXX procedure tries to remedy this behavior.

This REXX cmd file is used to start the FTPPM program through a Presentation Manager front end. This allows the choice of removing host entries in the TCP/IP NETRC file via a listbox without any user typing."

Author: Michele Marziani, Italy (1993).

Personal Hobbes Virtual Mirror

"This is a Rexx program that uses the file 00GLOBAL.TXT from Hobbes to build a group of HTML pages that mirrors the contents of the Hobbes ftp site.

It will produce only the the pages that emulates the Hobbes structure, and will not attempt to download any file.

In the other hand, if you keep any file you've downloaded from Hobbes in the appropriate directory starting form the directory where you put the MKPHVM.CMD program, it will detect the files and will put an icon on the HTML page so that you can "download" it locally. If you keep PHVM in your local disk or on a LAN you probably find it quicker than accessing the Hobbes site (and hopefully it would prevent you from downloading the same file two or three times like I sometimes do).

Netcat — Read/write data on connections using TCP/IP.

"Netcat is a featured networking utility which reads and writes data across network connections, using the TCP/IP protocol.

It is designed to be a reliable "back-end" tool that can be used directly or easily driven by other programs and scripts. At the same time, it is a feature-rich network debugging and exploration tool, since it can create almost any kind of connection you would need and has several interesting built-in capabilities.

It provides access to the following main features:

  • Outbound and inbound connections, TCP or UDP, to or from any ports.
  • Featured tunneling mode which allows also special tunneling such as UDP to TCP, with the possibility of specifying all network parameters (source port/interface, listening port/interface, and the remote host allowed to connect to the tunnel.
  • Built-in port-scanning capabilities, with randomizer.
  • Advanced usage options, such as buffered send-mode (one line every N seconds), and hexdump (to stderr or to a specified file) of transmitted and received data.
  • Optional RFC854 telnet codes parser and responder."

NSPING — A simple DNS latency/connectivity testing program.

"Nsping uses DNS queries to monitor reachability and operation of nameservers, as well as the latency of DNS queries. It does this by sending random recursive DNS queries to the nameserver (avoiding the effects of DNS caching) and measuring the amount of time between the sending of the query and the receipt of the response packet.

The latency of DNS transactions depends heavily on the data being queried for. The zone within which to query can be specified explicitly on the command line, or inferred from the local host. To measure the responsiveness of a nameserver for information it is authoritative for, specify one it's zones of authority as this zone.

To measure basic network latency and DNS processing time, specify a hostname on the command line. If this is done, DNS queries sent by nsping will not be randomized, and nameservice caching will cause the program to measure only network+processing time. If latency between the first and subsequent queries does not vary greatly, nameservice caching may not be enabled on the probed server.

Finally, a rough estimate of the latency between two sets of nameservers can be measured by querying one of those servers for information within a zone authoritative for the other servers. This would be more useful if there was a way to specify which of a zone's servers a target server queries."

PM Timer — Online phone costs calculator.

"PM Timer/2 is an online phone costs calculation program for OS/2 Presentation Manager. It gets rid of the hassle of having to use a different logfile for every communications program you use, not to mention the programs that don't even keep a logfile (think about Dial Other Internet Providers in the OS/2 Warp bonuspak).

PM Timer - when used in the right manner - logs all your outgoing calls in one single logfile and calculates the phone costs made in a specified period of time on your demand.

PM Timer will monitor the serial port to which your modem is connected and detect any connections you make with your modem or ISDN-card. (The latter only if you access your ISDN-card through a virtual comport provided by e.g. Cfos/2)

Furthermore, if desired you can run PM Timer unattended from batchfiles using commandline parameters.

And, with PM Timer running you'll always keep track of your online (surfing) time, even if the PM Timer window is invisible. PM Timer places a small clock that displays the online time and costs for that session in the currently active Presentation Manager window's titlebar."

LAN Server Management Tools

"The major purpose of the tools is to help the novice as well as the experienced LAN Server administrator to migrate, update and/or maintain his LAN Server domain(s).

The tools allow the administrator to extract the information of his current LAN Server environment into ASCII files, change it and use it to apply these changes to the same or to a newly installed environment.

Therefore these tools are useful to:

  • Backup a LAN Server domain
  • Restore a backuped version
  • Migrate (for example from LAN Server 3.0 to 4.0 or WarpServer)
  • Consolidate
  • Restructure the actual domain definitions

The programs are written in REXX not only to enable you to adjust them to your own needs but also to demonstrate the usability and easiness of REXX. We have written the programs to meet following objectives:

The command files have to:

  • be easy to read and debug by any user who is familiar with REXX
  • be easy to upgrade to a PM environment by using programs such as VX-Rexx, VisPro-Rexx, GPF-Rexx, DrDialog and so on
  • provide external customizable files for proper convenience such as column length, language and so on
  • provide error and logging facilities for all activities"
