Fan games and unlicensed titles are both welcome on IGDB, but they must be large enough to warrant their own page. We do not allow pre-alpha titles, so please be careful when adding games that are still in very early development. It's fine to include games that are heavily influenced by other releases, but keep an eye out for stolen content and asset flips.

Examples of fan games that we allow:

• Pokémon Uranium
• Hyper Dragon Ball Z
• Streets of Rage Remake
• Sonic: After the Sequel

For anything unofficial, please do not add series or franchise categorization that links them to the official, licensed versions. This means refraining from adding the official series/franchise in the Categorization tab when editing/adding games to the database. This also applies to non-official mods. When it comes to fangames and/or unlicensed games however, please make sure to always add the keywords “unofficial”, “fangame” and/or “romhack”/”homebrew” if applicable.

Example of what we do not want:

Adding Doom as the series/franchise to the independent game DRL

Adding Metroid as the series/franchise to the independent remake AM2R: Return of Samus

Adding Pokémon as the series/franchise to the independent fan-game Pokémon Phoenix Rising

Note: It is, however, acceptable (and encouraged) to add the series and franchise as keywords in the Keywords section of the Categorization tab.
