There are two different defense methods: Shields and armor. There are five different attack methods: Beam weapons, mass drives/Railguns, High Explosive missiles, Photon torpedos and ECM missiles

Shields protect against beams and photon torpodes. Armor against mass drives/rail guns and High Explosive missile. ECM missile damages only shields.

Following table shows how effective different attacks are against different defense methods, accuracy and range. Weapon types below multicannon cannot researched by normal means, these need to find.

Accuracy is also affected by target computers on attacker's ship. Also target ship's size matters how easy it is to hit it. Target ship could also have jammers which make hitting more difficult. Immobilized targets are 15% more easier to hit. If ship has working cloaking device this will also give -5% chance for hitting that ship. Note that Teuthidae's built-in cloaking device is not counted for this. If ship has working combat thrusters this will also give -5% chance for hitting it.

Ships also need to have energy source. This allows them to use components. Ships also have propulsion system which allows them to move in combat. If damage is equal to shield or armor then one shield or armor is destroyed. Shields can be regenerated during the combat while armor is not. Armor is restored between combat. If there is surplus damage then rest of damage goes to hull. Each component has hull points and if those drop to zero or below component is destroyed and cannot be used until repaired.

Amount of hull points per component depends on ship model. Smaller ships have less hull points than big ones. Smaller ships also can fit fewer components.

Planetary invasion

Occupied planets can be invade either by bombing it from orbit or dropping attack troops. Bombing destroys planetary improvements or even increases radiation if nukes are used. Ground invasion is attack type where troops fight against population. There planetary improvements are not destroyed but new population after occupy might be smaller. Of course more typical way of conquering the planet is first bomb it and at the very end just use ground invasion. There is also limit how much attack action ship can do per conquer. This depends on ships tactical speed. Each unit of tactical speed allows 4 actions during conquer. Regular ship weapons can be used also during attack. These have very small chance to destroy buildings(HE Missile are more likely than other weapons) but these can cause suppression against defending forces.
