Infrastructure Division:
Unique action: Repair(Anywhere)
This is the division that deals with the running of the Station; in particular, they’ve been concerned with the decay in the main engine of The Station over the past few decades, and are currently trying to find a way to fix that problem. This is where the protagonist starts as one of the new recruits. The Division Leader is the one who advocates for the division overall; this would entail asking for funding from the government, premium access to facilities, things like that. The Division Leader tends to be the oldest former “rising star” of the division; when someone is particularly innovative, they are usually allowed to work until that creativity “dries up,” and later become the Infrastructure Division Leader, thus taking on administrative responsibilities. This is most certainly the case with the current Infrastructure Division Leader, who was lauded as someone with overwhelming potential in her youth and is now well-established and respected in the Station. The current Division Leader is still an Engineer at heart, despite their responsibilities being administrative. It never really fit, but she’s trying her absolute best, and although as an administrator, she isn’t anything incredible, she certainly isn’t bad, either. However, this is through sheer effort; she spends long hours drafting messages and negotiation tactics with the other division leaders, the Mechanic, and the Controller.
BioEngineering Division:
This is the division that, on paper, is meant to create medicine, medical supplies, and grow food for the citizens of The Station. In reality, it’s more accurate to say that it’s a small group of extremely overworked people barely scraping together enough nutrition for the entire station to survive. In terms of medical supplies, they’re running low, but don’t yet have to make the choice between healthcare and sustenance. Over the course of the game, this could become an issue the protagonist has to deal with.
Division Leader Bioengineering is headed by a man named Nestor (working name). A sickly-looking man in his late forties, he looks older than his age because of the immense responsibilities heaped on him. Each year, his team’s budget gets cut a little bit more, but he still has to maintain the same production of food for the Station regardless. Once an idealist and still a phenomenal biochemist, in the decade since he’s taken this position, he has since seen too much of human nature at its worst, but maybe that optimism in him could be revived by someone with the right vision.
Mining Division
Headed by the Mining Division Leader This is the division that is directly responsible for the workers who are miners. They have no involvement in the production of machinery; they’re really, truly just the workers that follow orders day in, day out, with no rest whatsoever. As a result, while they are important, they aren’t very influential, because any protest they try to organize can simply be waited out, as the survival of the entire Station depends on them, with themselves included. If they don’t do their jobs, they themselves will die, and so they can’t have any protests going on. As further assurance that they’ll work, each mining team has an “overseer,” a member of the Safety Division who ensures that they are working, and working productively. These are almost all workers from the Outer Station, and the vast majority is addicted to Clover in order to get through the day. A few years ago, they had a union, but it was dismantled, so now they have nobody to advocate for them. Although they are technically workers for the Mining Division in particular, some of their workforce is always in service of the Industry Division, making and packaging all of the things that the Industry Division is responsible for selling. This is not a recent development; for as long as anyone can remember, the Mining Division has fulfilled at least part of this role, but ever since the current Industry Division Leader came into power, it’s never been this bad. The Division Leader is very different from the other regular members. In fact, this is the division in which there is the largest disparity between the Leader and the rest of the division. This leader is greedy, uncaring, and just exists to organize the miners into teams for specific tasks. It’s not a particularly difficult job. This Division Leader is the one who came into power right after the union was ended, and is, in fact, the one who came up with the idea to have overseers from the Safety Division.
Safety Division
Unique action: Close(Anywhere), Imprison(TBD)
This is the division most directly responsible for the general safety of the populace. There’s not much crime here - it’s too small for that - but when there is, the consequences are swift and merciless. Nobody knows exactly what happens when someone is taken away for questioning except that they end up working as one of the miners afterward. The officers mainly work in conjunction with the miners as overseers, with rather limited resources invested into the general population, and little of that in the Outer Station, which is ironically where safety is most needed. The Safety Division Leader: Out of all of the leaders, this one is perhaps the most ruthless. This Leader is a shadowy, vague figure, rarely seen in public besides official functions and meetings for the board position. They run an extremely tight ship; the members of the Safety Division are all competent, trained, and equally disciplined people because of their leader. The Division Leader reached this position about 20 years ago. They were a rising star in school, getting top marks, and could have chosen quite literally any division to join had they wanted to. It is out of their own desires that they ended up here.
Industry Division
Headed by the Industry Division Leader This is the division that has to do with any and all commercial products. Clothes, daily needs, over-the-counter medicine, etc. all go through this division. This Division uses labor from the Mining Division to make and sell all of its products. The only points at which the Industry Division use their own workers is in the development stage, all the way at the beginning of the product’s life cycle, and the selling stage, where members sell the product directly from shops owned by the Industry Division. Many of the members of this Division are the ones who didn’t get into the Infrastructure Division; as a result, there is some friction between the Industry Division members and the Infrastructure Division, and the same with the Leaders. This Division Leader is a soft pragmatist. They love comfort and luxury, while also having the intelligence of an Engineer from the Infrastructure Division, so they focus on maximizing the latent potential of the Industry Division, which is what they have done for the past 15 years in this post. They are close friends with the leader of the Mining Division, because of the overlap between their jobs, and also have a bad history with the current leader of the Infrastructure Division, but nobody is sure why. Neither one of them will say, either, but they’re clearly the most antagonistic towards each other during meetings between division leaders.
Division of the Interior
These are responsible for all administrative responsibilities for citizens here. All the paperwork, ranging from birth certificates to tax forms to immunizations and obituaries, all of it goes through them. As a result, they aren’t a very big division, but the influence they do have is disproportionate to their direct size. The Interior Division Leader is, ironically, a rather cheerful and personable figure. This is a division that doesn’t need much besides the equivalent of some skilled laborers and a few buildings here and there, and it is essentially impossible to take too much power from them because of their administrative influence. This leader is a bit of an airhead when it comes to people, but frighteningly sharp and competent with regard to legislation in relation to the Interior Division. They have tried to help out the Mining Division personally, but always got outvoted by the others, especially because the leaders of the Industry and Mining Divisions, together, make sure to only toe the line of legal boundaries when it comes to workers’ rights, or lack thereof. Nonetheless, the Interior Division Leader is still trying to work for the interests of the miners.
Education Division
Unique action: Give Degree(Anywhere)
This is headed by the Education Division Leader. This is a division, but essentially one large school, with multiple buildings up to the university level. There is a ranking system in place for each cohort where people know their own rankings, but don’t know anyone else’s. Nonetheless, because people are people, they also have an underground, unofficial ranking that happens to be mostly accurate, because people share their marks, and it’s pretty obvious who #1 is. The student body is mixed, with some people that want to work in some divisions and others who would prefer to work in others. At the end of their education, they apply to their desired divisions, and choose to attend whichever ones accept them. The Mining Division is by far the easiest to get into; the hardest is by far the Infrastructure Division because of their important role. Usually, only a few people per year are accepted into the Infrastructure Division, and it’s not uncommon for only 2 people or even 1 to get accepted. The Education Division Leader is best described as the headmaster of a school. Formerly an Industry Division Leader, this person is only somewhat focused on the education of the students there, and does everything in their power to foster competition between students in order to produce the most intelligent people possible for the higher-tier divisions. The higher one scores in tests and/or grades, the better the classes they have access to, so it’s very momentum-heavy in terms of possibilities for education there.
