Multi Role Recovery Capsule - tony48/Unofficial-KNES-Wiki GitHub Wiki

The MRRC (MRK) is a british capsule concept studied as a cost-efficient Hermes substitute. It would have launched on top of an Ariane 44L (you can also put it on an Ariane 1 for sub-orbital flights), and could have been used as a lifeboat for space stations, in particular for the European Colombus station or the French Solaris.

In this mod, the MRK also comes with an Extended and a Cargo service modules, in addition to a resuply uncrewed capsule. The following variants are mainly invented and will thus be named as in the mod itself: the MRK derivatives.

Descent Modules (DM)

The Descent Modules are the main interest of crewed capsule. According to the engineers, you can safely store a Kerbal into them while launching to space, and they may even survive a roasty re-entry !

MRK DM

Here's the MRK Descent Module, or MRK DM. This capsule plays a modest host to a crew of 4 and features a set of integrated RCS thrusters for orbit maneuvers. It's apparently designed to be reusable. At liftoff, a quite convenient Launch Espace Tower covers the RCS pods and the docking port. There's usually a heatshield bolted under the capsule.

Recovery DM

The Recovery variant of the MRK DM adds an additional two seats for crew members. It's designed to be a more capable life-boat, but it's a bit narrow inside. Watch your head !

Build Guide

  • MRK Launch Escape System - MRK
  • ECBM (for MRK) - Cover
  • Descent Module
    • Multi-Role Kapsule DM
    • OR Multi-Role Kapsule DM (Recovery)
  • 2x MRk-1c Parachutes
  • MRK-2b Heatshield

Service Modules

The Service Modules are fitted with everything that your capsule ever wanted: propulsion systems, cargo space, extra supplies, power unit, communication hardware... The MRK comes with 3 different SMs, each having a particular purpose.

Rescue SM

The Rescue Service Module is the baseline SM for the MRK lifeboat. This SM comes with attachement for two RCS thrusters, an antenna and a solar panel. It's also fitted with solid fuel Separatrons.

Build Guide

  • Multi-Role Kapsule Rescue SM
    • 2x 90° MRK-6f Thrusters
    • MRK-5a Antenna
    • MRK-3a Solar Panel

Cargo SM

This Cargo SM is a larger version of the MRK SM, featuring a wide enough cargo bay to fit your small sats inside. However, be aware that this cargo bay is unpressurized. Try not to store some living beings in there... It also comes with a convenient amount of monoprop. to feed your orbital maneuvering engines - the ones you nearly forgot to add before leaving. The solar panels are now mounted either sides.

Build Guide

  • Multi-Role Kapsule Cargo SM
    • 2x 90° MRK-6f Thrusters
    • MRK-5a Antenna
    • 2x MRK-3b Solar Panel
  • L-07 "Racoon" Service Module
  • K-0625 "Pingu" EndCap

Extended SM

The Extended SM is the more capable of the SMs variants. It's mainly based on the Cargo one, but some engineer figured out that this useless room inside would be more useful once full of propellant. You may now be able to reach the stars... or at least the Mun.

Build Guide

  • Multi-Role Kapsule Extended SM
    • 2x 90° MRK-6f Thrusters
    • MRK-5a Antenna
    • 2x MRK-3b Solar Panel
  • HM4 "Themis" Cryogenic Engine

User guide

  • The DMs and SMs are usually combined this way: Recovery DM with Rescue SM, Classic DM with Extended SM and Classic DM with Cargo SM.

  • Obviously, feel free to recombine them as you want. There will hopefully be no compatibility problems.
