Town of Saladri - tnalpgge/madapples-prophecies GitHub Wiki

This town of nearly 4000 is the largest in the Barony of Gianides, in the western portion of the County of Camagás in the Duchy of Raskot. Saladri lies on the shore of the southeast corner of the Gulf of Bazón. While the Barony of Gianides does not claim very much shoreline, it is quite keen to ensure that what little it has is reasonably prosperous and well-defended.

If one leaves the town to the southeast, Dromos Thalassa gradually curves to pursue a more easterly course, and eventually splits to go towards the baron’s official residence at Gativa, some ways inland, or towards the Barony of Sanhueza where the count lives. It is often easier to reach the Barony of Tassoglou via land by going through Sanhueza first; the coastal roads north out of Saladri are poorly maintained and traverse some challenging terrain. Those who wish to reach the central and northern counties of the Duchy also go through Sanhueza. The road to the southwest, Dromos Falaina, is the main route towards the County of Palamas and its nearby baronies of Adrastos and Kynthia, gateway to the rest of the southern counties. The road to the south, Dromos Kelyfos, stays within the county, eventually reaching the barony of Anastel.

Saladri has never been the largest port town, but it is a lively port town that doesn’t know how to be much else. A fair amount of high-value trade has been diverted away towards the capital City of Raskot, but other activities that required less supervision – or wanted to escape supervision altogether – moved in. There are some people and organizations who do less-than-lawful things while they are away from the town, but they usually make the effort to appear legitimate and upstanding when within its walls. There aren’t a huge number of docks, but there always seems to be one or two ships moving in or out on any given day. Of course people who pilot smaller vessels also find ways to make a few golden raja here or there. If there are rumors about sailors do when they are ashore, likely there is a sailor confirming them at any time of day or night near the docks.

Predictably for a town on the coast, shipping and trade form a major portion of Saladri’s identity, but other industries have built themselves some renown as well. A town must feed itself and the surrounding areas, and Saladrian fishermen daily gather some of the ocean’s bounty to keep their town’s bellies full. Crabbers work along the shores to the west of town, and a few oyster farms operate to the north. All manner of green produce is grown nearby; the strawberries and artichokes have earned some renown in neighboring baronies as well. Marine motifs and materials appear frequently in local arts and crafts. With the minerals found in the cliffs further to the north, local builders have engineered composite materials that can be poured or cast into a variety of shapes which they retain after a period of curing and hardening. While there are no significant forests or lumber operations close to the town, enough trade goes through that there always seems to be enough wood and fabric to mend a ship, a shack, or a shirt.

Locations

Agora Zenobia

This lively market district inside the walls in the northern part of town sells all the day-to-day things a person might need, and also provides a few ways to engage in discretionary spending. A fair number of the people who work here also live in this area.

The Drift

A shanty town sprawling from the south to the southwest. Many people who cannot afford or otherwise do not wish to live within the town’s walls live here. A few businesses, legitimate and otherwise, are scattered about. The town guard would not visit except for the encouragement of the mayor and the captain. Predictably, conditions are not always perfectly safe or sanitary here. People who have gone missing, by their own power or otherwise, are often called “adrift,” and they may be hiding out here if they have not met sticky ends.

The Otter Audacious
A seedy and squalid tavern and flophouse. Most don’t expect a vodshi (bear-folk) innkeeper named Mother-of-Pearl to be male. Bugbear bartender Klibziertee (“Klibz”) dispenses food, drink, and occasionally highly localized justice.
Skunkbarrel
A collection of adjacent shacks that organically merged over time and now serve as the closest thing to an inn available in this part of town. If there is a person in charge, it is the half-elf Sarmanas Corvacho, and he can find you some food and shelter. He can also point out a few of the more interesting folks, many of whom also probably run their own side hustles out of the establishment.
Hearth by the Sea
Just off the Dromos Kelyfos and a little ways outside the city walls stands a mostly round wooden building built of timber, assembled with some of the same techniques as the local shipbuilders use. Keepers of the Hearth Brother Dunmael, a dwarf, and Sister Ghorza, an orc, tend to the flame of Qhetia as well as the flock.
Zephyr Haven
Not far away from the Hearth by the Sea, the Keepers of the Hearth operate a shelter for widows, orphans, the battered, and the destitute. Not everyone believes that the kobold Khnerszi is in charge of the place, but he is used to being underestimated.

Kaskas

Outside the eastern wall of the town is a collection of businesses that mostly cater to travelers and traders. Many of the businesses are in the hospitality sector; some businesses actually push paper or goods too.

Blue Turnips
A restaurant and bar that mixes the best from the sea and the land, according to half-orc owner and head chef Ecra Safin.
Atlantis Rose
A collection of buildings with a variety of lodgings for rent, from modest to extravagant. Golnaz Deljou, a human, oversees the operation, assigning rooms, keeping books, and directing her staff. Satyr concierge Eusebi has connections to find additional amenities and services beyond the obvious, for those who ask the right questions.

Mayavel

Inside the eastern wall of the town is a large residential district that serves as home to some laborers and virtually all of the artisans and businessmen. Some artistic, academic, and cultural institutions make their homes closer to the center of town.

Academy of Textile Arts and Sciences
There are more than a few people in town who learned how to make or mend sails or shirts, or spin fiber into ropes that withstand the trials of the sea and the abuse of sailors. They very likely learned their craft within this broad three-story building, painted a rusty red. Half-orc headmaster Gnurm Dostrakus minds the faculty, staff, and students.
Sanctuary of Danmis
A place for worship of Danmis, and a place for appreciation of the musical arts and adjacent endeavors, in the shadow of the eastern wall. It also serves as a school of music, with formal instruction in singing, composition, and the playing of instruments. Conductor Agnes Duval, a human woman, arranges the faithful, the enthusiastic, and sometimes reaches out to the curious.

Northfins

On those occasions where you can’t find what you want to buy inside the walls, you can probably find it in this mixed residential and market district outside the northern wall. Many of the small family fishermen dock their boats along the shore near here.

Fisherman’s Forum
The Fisherman’s Society for Mutual Aid meet regularly on the bottom floor of this white-painted building on the edge of town. Over the door hangs a wooden relief carving of the hands of two different people gripping the same fishing pole, painted in simple colors to stand out. There are residences upstairs for short-term use.

Philippis Marina

Home to the only ocean port in the Barony of Gianides, the marina also boasts the usual collection of docks, shipping and trading businesses, and whatever other services that the nautical goings-on might require. The baron’s regulators and revenuers also make their offices here.

Admiral Octopus
A large and lively working-class inn and tavern close to the northern docks. Many people whose livelihood depends on the sea have walked through the doors many times. They offer anything a sailor may want, and possibly more if you know the right questions to ask. Married gnome couple Fronsbog (“Fronsi”) and Shallmyn (“Shalli”) Durup and their staff know how to deal with clientele that can be a bit rough and raucous at times.
The Pearl and Lyre
A middle-size middle-class inn and tavern close to the southern docks, but facing Princess Green instead of the water. Peace is kept by not only the staff but also many of the regulars, who do not suffer troublemakers for long. Elf innkeeper Sundamar Gilneiros has run the place as long as anyone can remember.

Princess Green

Horticulture has been a passion of the last few barons of Gianides. The current baron and his consort provide considerable direction for the manicured flower gardens that are open to well-behaved members of the public. Sometimes the nobles even visit to look upon the displays themselves.

Saltmarket

An industrial and commercial district inside the western wall of town. Businesses who deal with other businesses make their homes here, as do the more powerful and influential trade guilds. Larger items and larger quantities of smaller items are auctioned at several establishments within the area.

Keel House
The Boatwright’s Guild gathers at this two-story building that used to house multiple families. The exterior of the bottom story is painted red, while the exterior of the top story is stained and varnished but not painted.
Stevedore’s Lodge
The various commercial interests in town have agreed to set aside some space in this actively-used warehouse as a meeting place for those who move cargo between ship and shore, as well as those who move it around town. The Longshoremen’s Union, the Association of Teamsters, and the Porter’s Guild hold regular meetings here on a rotating schedule. Once per year all of their various associations assemble here for the Grand Conference of Haulers, where the various members can spend a little time on business and a lot of time carousing. When competitions occur at the conference, they are usually friendly and seldom result in injury.

Serot Square

The public square in the center of town features the largest temple to Naënta anywhere in the Barony of Gianides, as well as some spaces for public gatherings and performances. Tasteful works of art are displayed to the public, alongside memorials and monuments to a particularly disastrous season of storms and the public unrest that followed.

Gulf Church

Shellcrack

Just outside the western wall of town sits an industrial and manufacturing district that builds a few boats and works to repair and maintain the ships that come to call. The larger fishing and commercial boats dock near here.

The Brass Bell
A working-class inn and tavern reasonably close to the water’s edge, popular with local laborers for its low incidence of unnecessary drama. Frequent guests recommend the helmsman’s chowder served with crusty bread. Halflings (“Admiral”) Tasha Knotwise and (“Captain”) Fosco Hornblower direct the crew of the establishment.
Chapel of the Tides
The importance of the sea and the advocacy of those who make their living from it or upon it led to the establishment of one of the very few officially tolerated places of worship for Zmeyana within the entire duchy. The chapel is itself a weathered wooden building with a space where a few dozen may meet and worship, plus an attached office and private residence for the attending priest. One set of double doors serves as a main entrance. Another set opens up from the meeting space to an altar built as close to the shore as they can manage. It is made of stone taken from nearby tide pools, laced with all sorts of holes and crevices where creatures once lived, gradually smoothed by the waves over the centuries. Sister Yasha Zephon, a human woman, directs worship here.

Sovereign Hall

This walled district in the center of town holds the town hall, the guard station, a few other government buildings, and the residence for the mayor and their family. There is also a luxury apartment for the baron, should he choose to visit, but the current baron prefers to retire to a location outside the town walls.

Town Hall
Guard Station

Spinegarden

This collection of small farms and large gardens to the south of town serves as the baron’s residence when he is in the area. The current baron has challenged his staff to make the place self-supporting in regards to food grown, while still maintaining a stately, attractive, and peaceful landscape for the enjoyment of the nobility.

Organizations

Longshoremen’s Union
Fisherman’s Society for Mutual Aid
Association of Teamsters

Boatwright’s Guild

Recognizing that quality engineering and meticulous craftsmanship can be found in many industries, they actively seek to build mutually-beneficial relationships with other guilds for the general betterment of society, or at least those who practice related trades.
