Whatever view you choose you will always see -and be able to use- the player controls. From here you access all the usual functions you could expect: "previous track", "play pause", "next track", "stop"... plus
The Smart Mode button
The Crossfader button
The Equalizer button
The Volume button
The volume slider
By they way, a little secret is that you can control the volume by scrolling with your mouse over the volume icon!
By default the Smart Mode is on.
The Smart Play Mode is a unique and powerful feature: it populates the Now Playing List with tracks from your library that are similar to the one you are listening and have not been played recently. It uses Last.fm database and its suggestions system. By default it weeds out the last 100 tracks and 20 artists played in an attempt not to be too repetitive.
The player shows you the relevant information on the track being played: by double-clicking on any of the different elements you select them in the library. So, when you double-click on the artist name you select this artist in the library and so on. You have the same functionality from the context menu applied to tracks in the Now Playing List.
If you stop the mouse over the little cover, a bigger cover will show up so you can see it in more detail.
Double-clicking on the time will toggle time played/remaining time for the current track.
You can rate the current playing track clicking the stars from 0 to 5.
The record button
will appear between "stop" and Smart Mode buttons only if you have Recording enabled in Preferences and you are listening to a radio station.
