Onboarding - theunissenlab/lab-documentation GitHub Wiki
1. Things to do to get set up in the lab
1.1 Create a GitHub account if you don't have one and get added to the lab github by a current member (may not be necessary any more for everyone).
1.2 Bookmark this wiki: https://github.com/theunissenlab/lab-documentation/wiki
1.3 Get added to Slack. Ask Logan or Julie. Optionally, get yourself a matching avatar.
1.4 Request 24/7 [key card access to LKS] (Li Ka Shing Center Access Request Form)- navigate to "Li Ka Shing Center Access Request Form". Ask for access to Room 285 and floors 2 and 3 (for lab meetings). Fill out the form and complete requested trainings.
1.5 Get a user account and password on the lab network. Get someone with finch access to set up your account , and set up your VPN access or set up your ssh access set up for your own convenience if you want to connect from home.
1.6 You'll need to take a slew of online safety trainings, even if you're not working with any chemicals. Most of these are available at the UC Learning Center Website. The trainings necessary for you to obtain your card key access to our building are listed in the form (see 1.4). The requirements change over time and you've probably already taken many of them, so you'll have to see what seems necessary. Ask the other URAPS first to see if anyone has figured out what is currently required. It might include:
-Lab Safety Fundamentals
-Hazardous Waste Program
-Spill Response
-Workplace Safety Program (EH&S 502)
-Biosafety 201 (if working with viruses)
-Something about hackers
2. Wetlab only- do these only if you will be working with animals or chemicals:
2.1 Get access to animal facility in NAF. This scavenger hunt may take a few weeks so start early. This step includes: - An online safety course (EHS 205) - Another online course thing (working with the IACUC). (CITI training) - You are required to participate in the Animal Occupational Health and Safety Program via the on-line Occupational Health Surveillance System (OHSS, https://ehs.ucop.edu/ohss. Someone will need to make you a health assessment at that site). See the Occupational Health website (http://www.acuc.berkeley.edu/occupationalhealth.html) for more information, including instructions on how to complete this requirement. - You will need to take a NAF orientation as well, and you will also need to give an emergency phone number for the lab's Animal Use Protocol. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfuFovYjm4chAVnB2b_5dy0yPi6AQYrY_Xq767-wfkB8SZQqQ/viewform - Once you have taken the NAF orientation you can request key card access to NAF. You will want to request access to both the main door and the door between LKS and NAF, including the elevator.
2.2 Get a lab coat (PPE). This involves logging in to LHAT and taking a short online course, instructions here: (https://ehs.berkeley.edu/ppe/how-do-i-get-my-lab-coat-safety-glasses-or-splash-goggles). Not everyone gets a lab coat and it's not totally transparent why, but you need to at least start the process.
2.3 Read and sign the Chemical Hygiene Safety Plan (located in 285 aisle 5 in a file sorter, under the eyes of our lab fake corvid...
2.4 We may also need to take compressed gas safety courses but it's not yet clear (as of 04/21)- EHS 111 Compressed Gas Safety and EHS 112 Pressure Safety Awareness.
2.5 You will receive an email notification from Frederic via the RiskAndSafety platform for you to review your risk assessment form and complete an online health questionnaire (which happens at ehs.ucop.edu/ohss)
2.6 Finally we have to formally resubmit our AUP (animal use protocol) and have it approved before you are officially cleared to work with animals.
