Ingenic USB Cloner ‐ Booting - themactep/thingino-firmware GitHub Wiki
Some Ingenic-based devices can enter "USB Cloner Mode" without requiring disassembly, by utilizing specific cable adapters. This guide explains how to achieve this setup and streamline the process of flashing firmware or recovering your device.
Prerequisites
-
Micro-USB OTG Adapter
- A Micro-USB to USB-A OTG adapter is required. This adapter triggers the special boot mode in the SoC.

Steps to Boot into USB Cloner Mode
[!IMPORTANT] A standard USB to Micro-USB cable will NOT work.
-
Prepare the Cables:
- Attach the Micro-USB OTG adapter to your device’s Micro-USB port.
- Connect one end of the USB-A to USB-A cable to the OTG adapter and the other end to your computer.
-
Connect the Device:
- Once the cables are connected, the device will power on.
- The device should automatically enter USB Cloner Mode.
-
Verify the Connection:
- Check that your computer detects the device in cloner mode. If it does, you are ready to proceed.

Follow the Cloner Guide
After the device is in USB Cloner Mode, follow the instructions outlined in the Ingenic USB Cloner Guide. You can skip the step that requires shorting pins on the chip, as this cable setup bypasses the need for it.
Notes
- This method works for devices equipped with a Micro-USB port and supported by the Ingenic USB Cloner utility.
- Ensure that you use good cables and adapters to avoid connection issues.
- Disable 'forced reboot' in Cloner settings unless you want Cloner to continue to cycle (Cloner will reboot the device when its completed operations, which starts Cloner Boot mode again and continue cycling until you stop the Cloner manually or unplug the device.
By using these cable adapters, you can save time and avoid the hassle of opening your device to short pins for cloner mode access.
