Server Operations - techtalk/SpecLog-Resources GitHub Wiki

The following contains some recommendations for operating a SpecLog server.

General

The SpecLog server should run on a well-maintained and well-monitored server machine. The server should run as a Windows service for normal use, although it can also be run in a console for troubleshooting purposes.

Backup

Ensure that you configure regular backups of important system states (see Server Backup).

Logging and Monitoring

Warnings and errors are logged using Microsoft Enterprise Library, and can be configured in service.entlib.config to help you troubleshoot any issues. For example, you can define that both warnings and errors are logged to file, while any errors are also sent to your administrator's e-mail address. For more information, see Troubleshooting Server Setup Problems.

The default e-mail address for error reports is [email protected].

User Access Management:

At least one administrator should be granted the ability to create/disable users on the server. Access permissions for individual repositories can be managed by users themselves.

Upgrading the server

New releases of SpecLog generally require upgrading both the client and the server.

Note: If you are updating to a version of SpecLog prior to 1.13, ensure that all clients synchronise their changes with the server before updating the server.

Refer to the version's release notes for information on whether a release requires both clients and the server to be updated and details on how to perform the upgrade.
