Agenda
-
Recap salient features of IWXXM in support of the provision of information and information services over SWIM, and the importance to have a general idea how information is being consumed in the development of IWXXM.
- See METP WG-MIE/11 IP/3103
- A "deep learning" approach will be taken to find the information consumption pattern to help shaping IWXXM.
-
Sharing of views with regard to Aerodrome MET Observation and Forecast information and information service, which may cover:
- The information to be delivered in an IWXXM instance:
- For individual phenomenon: Coverage, property, fidelity (e.g. consolidated or primitive or both), representation (e.g. single point or time series), metadata (e.g. indication of the consolidation method like 2-minute running mean).
- For collective: Information and metadata required to convey the story.
- The associated information service(s):
- The kind of information service(s) to be make available, and additional metadata an IWXXM instance is required to support their operations.
- Anticipated way information is consumed.
- The information to be delivered in an IWXXM instance:
-
Any other information delivery pattern* IWXXM may want to support.
Note* : It may involve specific features of an information service (e.g. filtering in OGC EDR), as well as the use of multiple information services for delivery (e.g. WMO WIS2).
Notes
- Regarding the applications consuming aerodrome MET observation and forecast information services:
- DWD and FMI are providing to their clients tables of forecast parameters (rows) against time (columns) with values in the cells and colour of the cells reflecting those values exceeding thresholds.
- Apart from MET parameters, there are also consolidated parameters (MET x aerodrome data like head and cross winds) and probabilities (occurrence of a MET parameter exceeding a threshold like wind speed greater the 33 knots, occurrence of a set of MET parameters exceeding thresholds like the need of Low Visibility Procedures, occurrence of phenomena like CB, thunderstorm, etc.)
- Thresholds can come from Annex 3, regional, national and local (e.g. aerodrome) requirements. There are also thresholds which are dependent on use cases like company policies, aircraft type/configuration/status.
- There may be benefits for IWXXM instances to carry information on thresholds, but further discussions will be required. [Post meeting note: This touched on the provision of data in IWXXM instances for presentation purpose. This has exceeded the scope of "data provision" but in reality a common practice to facilitate the use of the information.]
- Regarding the aerodrome MET observation and forecast information services:
- It was understood that the use of WxObjects to describe individual observation and forecast parameters opens up the possibility to create collections (recalling that a collection may be created to tell a "story") of: a. WxObjects of a single or multiple observation parameters b. WxObjects of a single or multiple forecast parameters c. WxObjects of observation and forecast of a single or multiple parameters (e.g. to form one or more time series from past to future)
- Current WG-MRAD consensus was to provide separate aerodrome observation and aerodrome forecast information services.
- Regarding representation of meteorological parameters within a WxObject:
- For parameters usually provided by consolidating their primitive data (e.g. 2-minute mean wind from their 1 second records) it may be necessary to have metadata indicating how the consolidation was being made.
- It may be useful to provide several of such consolidated parameter (e.g. 2-minute and 10-minute mean wind) in a single WxObject to satisfy multiple use cases.
- A time series of a consolidate parameter (e.g. 2-minute mean wind at 1-minute interval for the past 10 minutes) in a single or multiple WxObjects may also be useful.
- While it is possible to provide a time series of primitive data used in consolidation (e.g. 120 1-second wind data used in calculating the 2-minute mean wind) to let the consumer do their own consolidation, there was a consensus within WG-MRAD not to encourage such provision due to the anticipated burden on the producer, consumer as well as the associated data exchange infrastructure.
Actions
- Make further discussions on how to engage collaborative work on the development of IWXXM schemas to support the provision of aerodrome MET observation and forecast information service.
