Aerodrome MET Observation and Forecast Discussion 2024 Feb 16 - team-sx/iwxxm-sx GitHub Wiki

Details

2024-Feb-16, 12:30-13:30 UTC, Webex

Agenda

  1. The 5 Issues Ilkka raised on GitHub (Note that the original issues were raised on Choy's personal IWXXM-SX repository (http://github.com/blchoy/iwxxm-sx) which is being used for creation of PR only. These issues have been moved to the correct repository location at https://github.com/team-sx/iwxxm-sx).
    • Use of time series in representation, in particular on the use of TSML: #12, #13 and #14
    • Start with a conceptual model for aerodrome weather forecast, then implement as IWXXM: #15
    • Modelling observable properties in aerodrome weather forecasts: #16

Notes

  1. Choy recapped what had been discussed in the previous discussion, including new ideas like variable time steps in time series and the provision of probabilistic information to support downstream operations
  2. Choy presented issues in applying top level features in external schemas like AIXM and TSML, as these features are designed with specific purposes in mind and for most of the time are expected to be use in a standalone way. Having said that, to ensure interoperability, it is still useful to use primitive types in these external schemas to define features for use in IWXXM (e.g. aixm:ValDistanceVerticalType in iwxxm:ElevatedVolume). Whether we could do the same thing with TSML is something to be explored
  3. Ilkka provided information on the latest status of OMS Observation (previously O&M) and investments in using external schemas based on O&M like TSML may encounter issues eventually. He further pointed out that OGC have not been making XML schemas for some time, as the community has already shifted their attention to JSON
  4. Probabilistic information is expected to gain popularity, albeit in most of the current use cases it is being consumed directly by human. To engage consolidation with other information a machine readable representation is required. Apart from probabilities of exceeding certain thresholds, mode and range of values at certain confidence level are also popular probabilistic information
  5. Participants look forward to have more sophistic ways of specifying the geometry of the "region of interest", as there are anticipation to provide information beyond the aerodrome (as defined in TAF for example). Potential "regions of interest" include Terminal Control Area (TMA), route segments (in particular the approach and departure paths), as well as sectors within the areas exercising the Standard Instrument Departure (SID) and Standard Terminal Arrival Procedure (STAR). To see how difficult it could be in describing weather information at these "regions", Choy suggest all to post challenges on GitHub Discussion for the rest to try creating mock ups

Actions

  1. Ilkka will see if TSML has primitive types that can be used to describe time-value pairs in iwxxm:PhenomenonProperty
  2. Choy will find out if there is any information model on probabilistic information
  3. All are invited to share existing and potential use cases on consumption of MET information, including those in other aviation domains like air traffic control, search and rescue operations, etc., as well as challenges on creating mock ups, on GitHub Discussion
