Economic Impact - team-exception-handlers/TransitSync GitHub Wiki

TransitSync is a free and open source transit simulation/decision-support platform. Its main goal is to provide transit planners with a controlled environment to test and compare different transfer coordination strategies without affecting the live transit network.

While TransitSync is not expected to generate any profit, it can provide economic benefits to Montréal’s public transit network, particularly the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) and CDPQ Infra. Since the Metro and REM are operated as separate transit systems, coordinating transfers between them requires considering how a decision made on one network can affect passengers and operations on the other. TransitSync provides a way to test different transfer coordination strategies in a simulation before implementation, allowing planners to identify which strategies are effective without disrupting existing service or committing significant resources to real-world trials.

Additionally, TransitSync can also help transit organizations make better use of their existing infrastructure and resources. By identifying when holding a train for connecting passengers reduces overall passenger delay, planners may be able to improve transfer reliability without adding additional trains or making costly infrastructure changes. This allows organizations to explore improvements to service efficiency while working within the constraints of their existing transit network.

In the long term, more reliable connections between the Metro and REM could improve passenger satisfaction and make public transit a more attractive option. Reducing missed connections and long transfer waiting times could contribute to increased ridership, and additional fare revenue for transit organizations.
