About this Section

The setting in refers to the time and place where the events of a story occur. It encompasses not only the geographical location and historical period but also the broader cultural, social, and environmental contexts. The setting is a crucial element of storytelling, as it provides the backdrop against which the characters' actions and the plot unfold.

  • Time: The temporal aspect of the setting includes the time of day, season, year, or era in which the story takes place. This could range from a specific historical period (like the Victorian era) to a futuristic or even a timeless realm.
  • Place: This pertains to the geographical location of the story, which could be a real city, a fictional world, a remote village, or a bustling metropolis. It also includes specific locations within the broader setting, such as houses, schools, offices, or wilderness areas.
  • Social and Cultural Context: This aspect covers the societal norms, cultural background, economic conditions, and political climate of the setting. It can greatly influence characters' behavior, attitudes, and the story's overall tone.
  • Environmental Factors: Elements like weather, landscape, and physical conditions also play a significant role in shaping the setting. For instance, a story set in a harsh desert landscape or a serene mountain village can significantly affect the narrative's mood and the characters' experiences.

The setting is more than just a backdrop; it can influence the plot and character development. For example, a story set during a war will likely have different themes and conflicts than one set in a peaceful time. The setting can also be used symbolically to reflect characters' emotions or the story's themes.

In essence, the setting is a vital component that helps to create a sense of place, immerses the reader in the story's world, and contributes to the narrative's authenticity and believability.

Overview

The bulk of the game takes place in a society that lives in large trees. In a later stage, the player will explore the bottom area of the tree as well. The society consists of a capital, and four satellite towns. It is from one of these smaller towns the player journey will begin. Along the journey between towns, the player will encounter several unique environments to explore. The bottom of the trees will be a gloomier, diseased area (possibility of lost city)

*note: figure out scale of characters to buildings to trees

Treetop

This game takes place in the fantasy city [name]. This treetop society is ancient. This is where we find our NPCs and shops(?). The government building in the town is made out of an intricately hollowed out trunk.

The society that exists here was built upon nature above all else. Their religious figures, holidays, and daily activities focused on the maintenance and worship of nature, especially the trees on which they live. However, their connection to the trees has weakened through the years due to the development of technology, with the society becoming more "self-sufficient" and moving away from worshipping the forest, literally weakening the life force of the trees.

TODO: Choose a name. what kind of society? Any tensions? Who lives there? What is most important to them? Themes and motifs? What are some biomes that exist within this larger area?

Ground

The lowest level of the game. Things here seem larger scale and more imposing. Swamp fungal area infected by the disease. Here are remains of a fallen kingdom already brought down by the fungus. Here are mushroom people who have gone mad from the infection. The area is much darker than other areas of the game, covered in fog and roots.

At the end of the area, player will fight the personification of the disease.
