1. External attribution, also called situational attribution, refers to interpreting someone's behavior as being caused by the individual's environment.
2. For example, if one's car tire is punctured, it may be attributed to a hole in the road; by making attributions to the poor condition of the highway, one can make sense of the event without any discomfort that it may in reality have been the result of their own bad driving.

Criminal Doctrines of attribution are legal doctrines by which liability is extended to a defendant who did not actually commit the criminal act. Examples include vicarious liability (when acts of another are imputed or "attributed" to a defendant), attempt to commit a crime (even though it was never completed), and conspiracy to commit a crime (when it is not completed or which is committed by another in the conspiracy).
