General description

The expanded Human Oral Microbiome Database (eHOMD) offers a comprehensive curated collection of information about bacteria found in the human oral cavity and aerodigestive tract, including areas such as the pharynx, nasal passages, sinuses, and esophagus. The database documents 774 species of oral bacteria, with 58% having official names, 16% being unnamed yet cultivated species, and 26% represented as uncultivated phylotypes.

eHOMD has developed a provisional naming system for these currently unnamed taxa, utilizing 16S rRNA sequence phylogeny. This system allows for the integration and direct linking of strain, clone, and probe data from various laboratories to a stable and consistent reference framework. This approach enhances the usability and accuracy of data across different research studies and the provisional naming scheme for unnamed taxa links to sequence data with bibliographic, clinical, phenotypic, and phylogenetic information and easy-to-use tools for viewing genome information.
