General description

Since 1992–1993, the NCI has sponsored the Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey (TUS–CPS), a tobacco use survey conducted as part of the Current Population Survey by the U.S. Census Bureau roughly every three to four years.

TUS data sets can be used to analyze trends in tobacco control initiatives, including attitudes regarding smoke-free regulations, formal and informal home smoking bans, and medical, dental, or other professional help to quit smoking. Analysis can be done at the national or state level and, in some cases, for areas smaller than states due to the huge sample size for most survey items.

Linkages

TUS can link to other datasets and CPS supplements to enrich analysis and can be linked to datasets including:

  • Annual Social and Economic (ASEC) Supplement provides data regarding education attainment, family characteristics, foreign-born population, geographic mobility, health insurance coverage, household composition, marital status, poverty, previous year’s income from all sources, program participation, receipt of noncash benefit, and work experience.
  • Voting and Registration offers demographic information on whether or not individuals register to vote, the number of persons who voted, and the reasons for not registering.
  • Food Security provides food access, expenditure, quality, and safety data.
  • Computer and Internet Use provides information about household access to computers and Internet use.
  • American Time Use Supplement (ATUS) measures how much time people spend doing activities like childcare, socializing, and volunteering. The ATUS to the CPS is especially useful for exploring how smokers identified in the TUS-CPS utilize their time as determinants of smoking cessation and tobacco use.
