General description
The Health Improvement Network (THIN) is a non-invasive medical data collection and analysis project comprising anonymized longitudinal patient data representing approximately 6% of the UK population since 1994. THIN is one of the most respected and reliable European databases of anonymized Electronic Health Records for primary care whose anonymized data are transmitted by a network of voluntary physicians who firmly believe that supporting such a longitudinal data observatory benefits medical and research progress.
As one of the most accredited and reliable data sources in academic studies and research, the THIN database is mainly concerned with the confidentiality of data and the rights of patients and Doctors. As such, THIN is overseen by an independent advisory committee that includes patients, clinicians, and researchers.
THIN aims to use real-world data to advance patient care and clinical outcomes by partnering with academics and research organizations in healthcare analytics and research, health authorities, and leading pharmaceutical companies to provide anonymized patient data for disease-specific case studies within primary care, retrospective, and prospective studies. THIN’s database(s) are used for healthcare resource planning, medical research, patient care management, prescribing analysis, and epidemiology. It is used to understand the patient pathway and influence significant improvements in healthcare and health outcomes for the UK population.
