General description
SEER-Medicare is a longitudinal dataset that combines two large population-based data sources and provides detailed information on Medicare beneficiaries with cancer.
The data comes from Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program of cancer registries with cancer and the Medicare claims for covered health care services from the time of a person's Medicare eligibility until death.
This dataset can be used to conduct studies on care patterns for persons with cancer before a cancer diagnosis, throughout initial diagnosis and treatment, and during long-term follow-up. Also, it involves the use of cancer tests and procedures and the costs of cancer treatment.
Variable categories
- SEER-Medicare has clinical, demographic, and cause of death information for persons with cancer.
Linkages
- The NCI and CMS have established linkages between SEER clinical data, Medicare claims, and CAHPS survey data, as well as between SEER clinical data, Medicare Part D claims, and MHOS survey data.
Unique variables
- Longitude Position in a Time Zone as a marker of circadian disruption. See - Longitude Position in a Time Zone and Cancer Risk in the United States
Limitations
- There are no hospital identifiers
- The data has to be restricted to the hospital setting, which limits its use in international research networks
