General description
The RAND Corporation is a nonprofit organization founded in the United States in 1948 by the Douglas Aircraft Company to provide research and analysis to the US Armed Forces. RAND uses applied science and operations research to translate theoretical notions from formal economics and the physical sciences into new applications in other fields to address transdisciplinary and quantitative problems. The United States government, private endowments, businesses, academic institutions, and private citizens contribute to its funding.
Institutional providers that are Medicare-certified must provide an annual expense report to a Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC). Cost reports include data on the provider's facilities, usage statistics, costs and charges broken down by cost center (total and for Medicare), Medicare settlement information, and financial statement information. The Healthcare Provider Cost Reporting Information System is managed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) (HCRIS).
The RAND Hospital Data tool aims to improve CMS HCRIS data so that a larger group of academics, analysts, hospital executives, and their consultants may more easily access the information and use it to solve issues and find answers to challenging questions.
The RAND financial performance dataset can be linked to patient-level datasets using geographic information (zip codes, ZCTA, longitude/latitude.) and dates.
