General description
The PICCOLO Widefield Database was derived from the PICCOLO (Portable In-vivo Confocal Laser Imaging) project, focusing on medical imaging, particularly in the area of widefield optical imaging.
The PICCOLO Widefield Database contains 3433 images from clinical colonoscopy videos, including narrow band imaging (NBI) and white light images from colonoscopy procedures in human patients, and is most applicable in clinical research, particularly in dermatology, oncology, and other fields requiring detailed imaging of tissues.
Widefield imaging in medical research typically involves capturing large, detailed images of tissues or organs, providing comprehensive views that can help in diagnosing various conditions. The PICCOLO system uses confocal laser imaging, a technique that provides high-resolution images by focusing light to a single point in a sample and scanning across it.
Data Categories
- Image data:
- Imaging data: Widefield optical images in formats such as DICOM, TIFF, or other medical imaging standards, representing large tissue areas (oral mucosa, skin, etc.) captured with high contrast and resolution and allowing detailed analysis of tissue structure.
- Annotations: Annotations indicating regions of interest (ROIs) like areas of abnormality (inflammation, lesions, tumors), generated by pathologists or radiologists to assist in training ML models for automatic detection of abnormalities.
- Metadata: Information about patient or tissue sample - clinical condition (e.g., type of skin lesion), imaging parameters (e.g., exposure time, laser wavelength), and patient demographics (age, sex, etc.); location of the tissue imaged (e.g., specific body parts) and the clinical diagnosis associated with the tissue sample (e.g., benign lesion, skin cancer, etc.); Calibration information related to the imaging system.
