General description
The PHARMO Database Network is a population-based system of electronic healthcare databases. It merges anonymous data from separate primary and secondary healthcare settings in the Netherlands, providing an unprecedented opportunity to gain insight into the patient journey and healthcare in the Netherlands.
Variable categories
In-patient Pharmacy Database
- Dispensing records - information on the drug type, strength, start and end date of use, dosage regimen, and route of administration.
General Practitioner Database
- Laboratory test results;
- Information on diagnoses and symptoms;
- Referrals to specialists and healthcare drug/product prescriptions.
- Prescription records - information on the product type, prescription date, dosage regimen, quantity, strength, and route of administration;
Limitations
- Increased risk of underreporting mild adverse events since reporting events depends on the physician's perception of the relevance to report.
- Biometric data of GP database is biased - includes more information of higher-risk patients than the overall population.

Data access
According to the data collection governance regulations, only researchers of the PHARMO Institute and academic affiliates can access the PHARMO Database Network. All requests for data are checked against company and privacy policies and must be endorsed by the privacy and governance board. The data application and terms and conditions can be accessed at (https://pharmo.nl/).
