General description
The ACS National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) is a dataset built by surgeons, with surgery data, analyses, and reports hospital decisions about improving quality of care.
Variable categories
- Surgical outcomes measures.
- A broad range of 30-day outcomes, including mortality, readmissions, and length of stay.
- Preoperative comorbidities and complications that occur in the peri-operative period
Limitations
- It is not possible to assess variations among specific clinicians or account for clustering of outcomes;
- There are no specific dates and times, and this precludes evaluation of time-of-day or day-of-week effects. Most outcomes in the ACS NSQIP data are limited to a 30-day follow-up period;
- Cases are typically selected using random sampling to provide a hospital-level quality assessment, and they may not adequately capture rare outcomes or accurately portray outcomes for rare cases.
- A select number of variables are missing or have undergone an evolution over time, making analysis difficult or impossible.
