General description

The Nationwide Readmissions Database (NRD) is among several databases and software programs created for the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP). The NRD is a unique and effective database created to facilitate multiple analyses of national readmission rates for all patients, independent of the projected payer for the hospital stay. The lack of nationally representative data on hospital readmissions for all ages is a significant gap in healthcare statistics addressed by this database. The NRD contains information from around 18 million discharges annually, unweighted. It calculates a weighted estimate of 35 million discharges. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality funded cooperation between the federal, state, and private sectors that resulted in the development of HCUP statistics, which are used to guide decisions at the federal, state, and local levels.

Important features of the 2019 NRD include:

  • A high sample size provides enough data for analysis across hospital types and assessing readmissions for relatively uncommon illnesses and procedures.
  • Data on discharges from 30 geographically separated states account for 60.4% of all hospitalizations and 61.8% of all US residents.
  • Created to be adaptable to different readmissions studies conducted in the US by different payer types.
  • The analyst may use the NRD to discover the factors related to different hospital admissions for the same patient over a year.
  • Not intended for use in regional, state-or hospital-specific analysis, but rather to enable nationwide readmission analyses.
