General description

The National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) is an online database that houses details on medical malpractice settlements and specific adverse actions involving healthcare professionals, providers, and suppliers. Congress created it in 1986 as a workforce tool to stop practitioners from relocating from one state to another without disclosing or being aware of prior unfavorable performance.

Federal regulations permit qualifying entities to query the NPDB and/or submit reports. Subjects of these reports can access their data, including individuals and organizations. The reports are private and not accessible to the general public.

The NPDB supports advancing high-quality medical treatment and preventing fraud and abuse in healthcare delivery systems.
