General description

The NORDCAN cancer database utilizes the ICD-10 codes from the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems for categorizing cancer sites. To ensure consistency over time, some ICD-10 codes were merged due to previous versions' classifications. For detailed site-specific data, users are encouraged to consult individual registries. Data can be sorted by diagnosis order using ICD-10 codes or labels.

NORDCAN organizes data by country/region, type (including incidence, mortality, prevalence, and survival), time period, cancer type, gender, and age group, without individual patient records. Due to varying coding practices and conversion methods across countries, discrepancies in cancer incidence and mortality data may occur. NORDCAN standardizes these data to ICD-10 based on international guidelines, though some national differences remain.

Prevalence data is derived from patient follow-ups on death and emigration, combining cancer and population registers, and is available from 20 years post-initial diagnosis. The database estimates age-standardized relative survival using the Pohar Perme method (ICSS). Additional details on survival estimation and confidentiality protection measures are accessible online at the NORDCAN GitHub page.
