General description

The NIH Toolbox includes over 80 stand-alone measures available in 30-minute batteries to assess Cognition, Emotion, Motor skills, and Sensation.

NIH Toolbox Tests are performance-based tests of function. Also known as "objective measures," there are four kinds, three of which are exclusively administered via the iPad app:

  1. Cognition: The mental processes involved in gaining knowledge and comprehension, such as thinking, knowing, judging, problem-solving, and remembering. These higher-level functions of the brain encompass imagination, language, perceptions, and the planning and execution of complex behaviors.
  2. Motor: The ability to use and control muscles and movements. Motor performance includes voluntary control of fine and gross motor functions, including balance, dexterity, endurance, locomotion, and strength. Motor performance also demands the interaction of multiple body systems, including the cardiovascular, muscular, nervous, and sensory-perceptual systems.
  3. Sensation: The biochemical and neurologic process of detecting incoming nerve impulses as nervous system activity. Sensory processers are vital to one's level of independence in relationship with others, academic and occupational endeavors, and activities of daily living.

The fourth, a self-report and proxy-report, measures for Emotion and select Sensation domains:

  1. Emotion: Any strong feelings, such as fear, joy, or sorrow. An affective state of consciousness in which fear, hate, joy, sorrow, or the like is experienced (as distinguished from cognitive and volitional substates of consciousness). Emotions can be negative and distressing or positive. The NIH Toolbox Emotion measures include four significant domains: Negative Affect, Psychological Well-Being, Social Relationships, and Stress and Self-Efficacy.
