General description
The Central Repository of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) functions as a depository for both specimens and data accrued from specific clinical studies funded significantly by the NIDDK. This Repository's objective is to enhance the utility of these studies by providing broader accessibility to the research community. This access extends to data, materials, and specimens even after the conclusion of the study, thereby facilitating secondary usage. Such a strategy promotes innovative research endeavors and augments the scientific and impactful worth of these resources.
Furthermore, the majority of studies financed by the NIDDK involve the collection of genetic biospecimens and the implementation of high-throughput genotyping. This practice enables external researchers to utilize the Central Repository's resources for correlating genotypes with phenotypes and conducting insightful genetic analyses. The Central Repository has two separate yet integrated contract-supported components:
-
Biorepository Receives biospecimens collected in many different studies, stores and distributes them under optimal conditions to qualified investigators.
-
Data Repository Receives, archives, maintains, and distributes data from studies. In addition, the Data Repository analyzes stored data in response to inquiries, assists ongoing studies in preparing data for eventual archiving, coordinates cross-referencing genotyping data housed at NCBI's dbGaP for specified studies, and maintains the Central Repository website.
